I thought one of the financial burdens on this country at the moment was people living longer. So why are the government promoting healthy living, like banning smoking in public, making us more aware of our diet, pointing out the dangered of binge drinking, etc.
Wouldn't it make more sense for them to encourage us to drink, eat and smoke ourselves to death younger? Or are they using reverse psychology?

Before we smoke ourselves to death, we're going to cost the government in heart surgery and cancer treatments and they're forever finding new, better and more costly ways of repairing our bodies.
The government has probably just looked at the maths and decided that they no longer make a net profit out of selling us death sticks and s
tty cheap food and therefore want to encourage us to be healthy. I imagine they'll start to "liberalise" their opinion of euthaenasia if we really start living too far past our tax-by date.

According to the Office for National Statistics the UK Government collected £8.1bn in tobacco taxes in 2002 and spent £1.5bn on smoking-related illnesses. (source BBC)
So realistically if everybody stopped smoking some other taxes would be increased to pay for the shortfall. The problem is today, most tobacco products are bought from the local Baren so Spain and the rest of Europe benefit from our taxes.

I suppose that as more and more people give up smoking, it becomes more expensive per person to treat smoking related illnesses?According to the Office for National Statistics the UK Government collected £8.1bn in tobacco taxes in 2002 and spent £1.5bn on smoking-related illnesses. (source BBC)

If we all smoked, now that would be great for the country!
