My birthday end of the month ( frown ) and I was wondering again about some camera gear. Specifically a decent bag and maybe a re-think on lens combos.

At the moment I have a D80, which I love and can get some cracking shots with, but I have only the 18-200mm AF-S Nikkor Lens that I bought from new when I bought the camera in '06 (I think). It is fine for almost everything, but is under-endowed for close up and occasionally on zoom.

What other combos could I use..? What are the commonest lens combos to catch all (+90%) situations..? 18-70mm&70-3/400mm perhaps..?

Having now two lenses, brings me onto camera baggage. I don't have a camera bag, usually just use an old rucksack, but feeling more and more guilty for not treating it right. Would like a sturdy rucksack if poss' with perhaps some straps on the outside for the manfrotto and ability to put a couple of lenses, flash, wipes, filters and probably most importantly a bit of extra non-camera day kit (to save having to carry two bags).

Any advice much appreciated...!

Cheers ~PHIL

The combination that kept me happy for many years was a wide angle zoom and a telephoto zoom - latterly the Nikkor 18-70mm and Nikkor 70-300mm ED (the latter of which is looking for a new home). As for macro, you could do it cheaply with a close-up lens, or properly with a macro lens.

You might want a faster lens than the 18-70, eg the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8, which would give you faster shutter speeds in low light situations. That would give you more options even if you kept the 18-200 for the long end of the zoom.

You could also investigate getting a flash unit.

As for bags, take all your gear into Jessops and choose a bag which fits smile
