Cheap International Calls
Discussion
Hi
I want to make some cheap international calls from my mobile (to South Asia).
Direct from my Tesco mobile is 40p a minute and about 20p a minute from our TalkTalk landline phone. But I am looking for something under 10p a minute.
We've used calling cards in the past but now I am looking at one of all these cheap call through numbers popping up all over the web.
Anyone have any recommendations? I have tried a couple and the voice quality doesn't seem to be that good compared to a call direct from my mobile.
I'll be calling to mobiles from my landline (because my mobile doesn't offer any free minutes)
Is there anyway of being sure of the charge for the number I am dialling through with?

Obviously it depends exactly where you are calling but I use Skype for most international calls. Call quality is generally very good and it is much cheaper than my virgin phone line.
See HERE for call rates
edit to add that Skype also tells you your call rate..

When looking for calls to the olds in Spain, I assume it's good for SE Asia also. A lot of the numbers seem to be run by the same people, or at least sound/work exactly the same (Same woman doing the instructions). The ones I use cut off after 60mins, you just need to redial. I normally don't use the very cheapest (0.5p/min in my case), but just for the ones slightly down the list, where the lines are multiplexed with fewer people and the sound quality is better.

If you've got Virgin you can call from your house phone using Anywhere200 or 400. I have the 400 for about 20 quid a month and the missus calls the folks in Italy or me in the Middle East when I'm working. Doesn't matter if you're calling a mobile or landline, it's all included in the package. One call to the ME mobile number makes it worth having over a normal tariff.
Find an asian website......they know what the cheapest way to call home .
In my local convenience store (in the US) the owner also knows which cards are best for each region by which ones are bought by each nationality.
I can't be bothered by all that, I have an AT&T plan, 9cents UK, 14cents Asia. (But I pay 23cents for Philadelphia which is a 30 min drive
)
There is also some software out there.
