Drove through Bury Park in Luton earlier on today and saw a parade going on in the high street. Must of been about a hundred guys all with no tops on hitting themselves. An incredible site and sound. I know its something to do with shia muslims but not idea what this act of self pain signifies?
It was bloody cold too, not the sort of weather to be bear chest.
Anyone else see this?

I am not a Shia - but this is the month of Muharram

"The Mourning of Muharram is an important period of mourning in the Shi'a branch of Islam, taking place in Muharram which is the first month of the Islamic calendar. It is also called the Remembrance of Muharram"

"Shia Muslims flagellated themselves during the Moharram procession to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad."

Do you think the story is untrue or factually incorrect then?

Isn't self-flagellation pretty popular in some branches of the Catholic church too? (e.g. Opus Dei)

Religious nut nuts cross all racial and cultural boundaries.

You can guarantee it, just as you can guarantee people who didn't read it commenting on it!.

Actually I'm no fan of the DM myself, but the article does explain what the whipping yourself ritual is all about in answer to the OP's, errr, OP! smile

Very true, the one rule of extreme religion is to out-crazy the next guy to prove, beyond doubt, that your imaginary friend is better than theirs.......

I'm sure they think it is very important and I support their right to do it if they want, I also support my right to call them complete and utter idiots.
