Where to stay in Peaks in June?

Stayed for a few days in Edale in the Peak District about 12 years ago a quite fancy a revisiting the area with the Mrs and doing some walking, cycling and general sight seeing in early June.

I like the idea of a self catering cottage in a nice location. Near enough to civilisation to pop to the shop/pub/restaurant, but not in the middle of a busy town.

Any recommendations for where to stay/go/visit?

There are plenty of holiday cottage companies about. Anyone have any particularly good (or bad) experiences with any of them?

Bakewell or Ashbourne are both nice, plenty to do around either of them. Tissington is also very nice and around 10mins outside Ashbourne. Recommend going to kedleston hall, calke abbey is also worth visiting if you like stately halls. We have some of the best driving roads in the uk and not to many speed cameras or other cars!! plenty of sheep tho.

Somewhere around Bakewell would be perfect, although perhaps not Bakewell itself, as it's a big touristy! It has decent enough food, pubs, and accommodation options, though.

Can recommend Youlgreave, which is a village about 5 miles away, with a few basic shops, three decent pubs, and a range of accommodation. Ideally situated for getting to know the area, and situated in fantastic countryside.

For cycling, the area between Bakewell, Rowsley, and Chatsworth is good fun, challenging, yet still approachable; there are also some fantastic tracks up from Chatsworth onto the moors behind. All easily reachable on bikes from Youlgreave. Also some good stuff if you head out towards Great Longstone, and Longstone Edge behind it.

Hope Valley...Hathersage > Hope > Castleton > Edale

I think there are some cottages nearby, say Bradwell, Hucklow, and villages around there.
