Max Tyre Width?
Discussion
Brought the Cerb home last night after taking the girlfriend out for a meal and thought I'd use it for work today. Came out this morning.... White Over with SNOW!!! Only got about 3mm left on the rears and it did not like it at all!!! So I'd made my mind up that when i replaced them i would try some slightly wider ones on it. I'm running 18inch Spiders shod with 255/35/18 and was thinking about 265/35/18 or even 275/35/18. But.... will they catch? At the moment they are fine. When i come to replace the fronts i was going to go wider there also. With the 18's the ride is quite firm over our patchwork Sheffield roads and i think the extra profile will help soften things up a little, and some rim protection would be nice as the 225/35/18 fronts are stretched onto the wheel leaving the rim sticking out way beyond the tyre just looking for the nearest kerb!
So whats the widest that's been fitted front and rear without problems/with problems?

I changed from saturn 16's with 225 45's to RL17's on the front with 235 45 R888's and had to add lock stops to prevent the tyres from rubbing on the top wishbone on full lock. The resultant turning circle appromiates a super tanker
BTW - wider tyres will make it worse in snow not better

Is the offset the same on the front and rear wheels? I may try the rears on the front if they are and see if they catch? It would be nice if i could get away with 255's on the front and 275's on the rear.
Loadsa grip for turning in and stopping!

Im currently 245/45/16 at the moment... would love to go as wide as possibly in the back, I have very little tread left!
Why do you want to go as wide as possible? I'm always intrigued as to why people want to do this. In my younger days with 'normal' cars, I always upgraded to riduculosly wide wheels and tyres because I thought it looked good, and would improve handling and grip. As I grew older and wiser I realised that wider tyres don't neccasarily increase grip, in fact they can often reduce it. There is an optimum width for each car, and that optimum depends on what you intend to use the car for. I would have thought that TVR got it pretty much spot on with the standard fittings, but I'm always open to learn more than I do.
A cautionary tale of fitting wider wheels: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=nqqZ28m8uCo
Although i appreciate the concerns of going too wide i wouldn't have thought that 20mm would have made that big a difference on a standard setup of 255mm as long as i reduced the pressure accordingly? My reasons for going wider are more for practicallaty reasons than anything else. Soften the ride up slightly and the main one with the fronts is so i have some rim protection. I'd gladly go wider even if performance/grip didnt alter at all just to get some rim protection from my awful parking. Even if i have to be carefull not to make the same mistake as the guy in that vid! (maybe fit some WIDE LOAD stickers?)
