How do you get a powerful shower?

We have an electric shower - bolts on the wall, takes mains pressure water, heats it on the fly and pushes it out of the shower head. Thus it is weak and pathetic.
How do you get one of those push you to the floor showers? Do they work off the central heating boiler or a separate one?
I have no knowledge of plumbing or heating.

Power shower fed from the mains.
This will use a pump, can be installed anywhere between your hot water tank and your shower. Sometimes they are part of the shower unit.
You can get them to increase pressure to all water, i.e. the bath as well, so fills up quicker.
Alternatively, build a tower on top of your house about 20 metres high and house your hot water cylinder in it.

Hmm, I'm no expert, even though according to the customers at my old work (Wickes) I should be because I can work a till at a DIY store, therefore I should know everything there is to know about everything DIY, but I digress.

tloads of pressure, then it exits the pump from another pipe and ends up coming out of your shower. That's very basic but in theory I think it is right, perhaps check at your local DIY store, where the 17 year old cashier who is perving at the teen girls who are forced to go DIY shopping with the family should know everything...

When I was rennovating my flat I had a new shower put in, with this being the main aim. The guys that did it put a dedicated pump onto the shower's hot water supply that switches on automatically when you turn the shower knob.

My parents have electronic thermostatic showers at their place, and while they are nice and powerful, the thermostat gets messed up sometimes and blows very hot/ very cold every few seconds. Very annoying. Just get a normal mixer shower with a big eff off pump.

You can't pump water directly coming from the mains, which is one of the reasons you have separate tanks for hot and cold. The outlets from these tanks are pumped and fed into the shower, which can be as powerful as your storage & pump capacity allows. A system boiler is used to heat the water in the hot water tank, ready for use.
Another method is to use a combi boiler which provides a good flow rate, although this won't be as good as a pumped system mentioned above, and will rely on your mains pressures coming in to you property.
The third method is to use a mains pressured 'unvented' cylinder, which uses a separate hot and cold tank, but relies on your mains pressure instead of a pump.

The shower in our bathroom is a Showerforce 1000XM and has to be the most powerful ordinary electric shower I've experienced. We've not got mains pressure hot water but the in built pump does a very good job.
Having said that when we re-model it we will go the way of a proper pump powered shower and/or new boiler.

I bought a power shower which sat on the wall in the shower cubicle and plumbed to the existing supply from hot and cold water tank. Easy to fit. You can buy remote pumps and install in loft etc but more awkward.
Normal combi boiler, no header tank, and a dustbin lid shower head positioned directly above my head, in a roll-top bath with shower curtain.
Its not as high pressure as a power shower, but frankly I don't want that. What I do get is big fat fast drops of water on my head, just like standing outside in heavy rain. Its wonderful.
