Is this true, I have just been into the local Jacobs as they have a very good deal on the 40D Body £505 including cash back.

asked when it might be that they are getting more stock at that price the answer from the store manager was they arent getting anymore stock for the foreseeable future as canon are discontinuing the range?????????????

I understood that the 40D would be running along side the 50D and not being dropped ARGH!

Answers on a postcard please?

It seems logical - Nikon dropped the D200 a while after the D300 came out.

Gotta have new products every year you see, keeps the market happy, and keeps people upgrading form their now-obsolete almost-a-year-old junk wink

Just an overlap period whilst existing stock is reduced. Don't want to stop sales moinths in avance of the ready supply of a new body.

It was the same for the 400D.

Did you really expect anything different?

Warehouse Express are advertising 40D's at £558 (and then £60 cashback from Canon), but the website is listing no stock. It will allow you to place one on back order though, so is probably worth giving them a phone call and see if they have a different story.

Maybe Canon are now ramping down the 40D production level as they ramp up other newer models. Keeping the 40D in production does help hold up the price of the 50D, but it can't have too much lifespan left now.

Typicaly the xxD line is refreshed every 18months , though it could just be a small refresh. So this should be soon, Probably anounced end of Feb?

The 50D wont replace it theres still way to big a price gap to the 40D I think.

Er, how is that then?

The 50D is in effect the family replacement for the 40D

The 450D may well be ready for replacement by, say, a 500D which might be announced in February or thereabouts for spring/summer availability.

Or there may be other permutations in the offing. Who knows, except Canon?

The price gap is only there because they have been reducing the 40D to shift them. The 50D is roughly the price the 40D was when it was launched a few years ago.

No it wasnt, canon stated it would be amodel above the 40D and run concurrently.

Yes this could change, and I assume canon have the ability to reduce the price of the 50D somewhat & the 40D is realy due for a refresh (something new or the 50D?).

The 40D was(with cashback) down to £500 or so 6 months ago too.

I think it'd be a mistake to remove it and just leave the 50d in there, its in some was an inferior camera.

the D300 was the replacement for the D200 which is why the D200 was dropped , i dont consider the 50D as the replacement for the 40D , and i have not heard anything about the 40 being discontinued

They said a similar thing about the 400D when the 450D came out.

As has already been observed they sadi the same thing about the 400D when the 450D was announced. The parallel availability is usually about 6 months it seems. In the case the 400D the 1000D became the effective replacement as the lowest level SLR iirc.

4 current levels in the Canon line

xxxxD at the bottom then xxxD, xxD and then you hit the Pro targeted bodies - xD's of one number or another.

Overlaps and replacement cycles are almost certainly temporary. The market will dictate, whatever its influences.

Maybe not mentioned in the press release for the 450D (why would they?) but they were certainly running them side by side for a few months until quite recently when the 1000D came on stream in numbers.

I certainly read or heard of the policy somewhere, though finding the reference might take more time than it is worth to do so. I'll post if I stumble across it in the next few days. Not that any such statement ever means much of course ...

They have always had overlap with a new model in the same range, as inventory is cleared etc.. AFIK the 40/50D is the only time they've said there keeping both.

So then with the points mentioned would it be worth while holding out to see if they restock a body only option before rushing out to buy the remaining 17-85 kit bundles they have left just to get the body?

IMO the 17-85 is, whilst not a poor lens, overpriced for its mediocraty, the nwe IS kit lens is in every way as good and cheaper.
