As a bit of an update to this thread, I got the light tent out the other night and needed a subject, so as I may well be getting shot of some of this stuff this weekend I thought I'd get some images. The Nikon is definitely staying but the Praktica has got to go as there's no room left in the cupboard!

Not really used a light tent before so comments welcome!

They seem awfully dark (black on black is not usually best) and slightly pink.

Here's one I took for a neighbour wanting to sell his camera on eBay:

Yeah not sure where the pink came from, I think a bit more tweaking in photo shop is needed. The images are not really for the benefit of selling the stuff more that I was trying for some sort of atmospheric feel. I think if I were to photograph them for eBay I'd try for something more like (even half as good would be nice!) the image you posted with a clean white background.

if you shot awb it probably knew you were taking flash so warmed the image up. Personal taste dictates where you want your white balance, some balance for white, others for warmth others for cold. I like a bit of warmth.

If you shot RAW you could easily adjust the colour temp of the image using the tools, you might be able to in jpeg too mind but I personally always do that in raw first

I like the dark look myself alhtough agree about the white balance being a bit too pink. For a first go I think you've done very well.

OT: I remember those quality control stickers, I only ever saw one item in my life that said anything other than "passed" but I can't remember what I said. I think it was "commended".

Does it matter what RAW converter is used? These were all PP in iPhoto as RAW files maybe I should try Photoshop to get rid of the pink cast.

I'm not sure about that yellow sticker, part of me thinks I should leave it on the camera as its all original, but part of me wants to get rid of it as it just looks wrong! I don't remember far enough back to know if you were supposed to take them off when you brought things or leave it in place?

Serious thought; if you put shots as good as that in ebay auctions, will people realise it's the actual camera or will they just think you've looked for a generic image on the web?

I'm not familiar with iPhoto but I imagine that any RAW processing programme will allow you to alter the white balance, which I think would be the easiest way to get rid of the pink hue.

I guess it depends on what you are selling. My thought has always been if your selling photo gear I'd expect half decent pictures!

Luckily for me these are going nowhere near eBay. I'm hoping to trade in the bits I don't want at a Camera fair this weekend for a lens or two that I do want. Even if it gets bugger all in terms of value it will keep the wife happy as I'm not filling the house with more stuff. As far as she is concerned getting rid of a large box of stuff I'll never use in exchange for a small item or two i'll use quite a lot is a good thing!

Fair point. I just take the view that if I'm selling something then the better it looks, the more likely it is to sell. It also implies I'm a conscientious person who does things well and looks after his kit - all of which help to get that extra bid! I suppose I could add 'Photo shows actual item for sale' though.

Yup, I agree entirely and I do my best to take a nice photo. But it just occured to me - that picture above looked professional, really well done, and so would people realise it's the actual item biggrin

Nicely done, nevertheless thumbup

Cheers TH smile

Nothing leaves Bloke HQ until it's as good as I can get it. 'If it's worth doing, do it well. If it's not worth doing, watch TV instead'

(But I do have the advantage over the OP of a whole room, in which has been exploded a bucket of white paint, and lots of lights and softboxes, so it's not really a fair comparison)

ETA: Yes, I always left my gold sticker on! Are you sure yours was always on the front of the pentaprism housing? Mine were usually on the right hand side when viewed from the front.
