Can you kill it and eat it if its not endangered?

Just wondering really, either here or abroad. If you're on totally public land and you see an animal that takes your fancy. Are you allowed to just kill and eat it (assuming the weapon you used was legal) unless its protected.

Well, you may find yourself in trouble if you shoot a cow running around the street in India..

Not a clue about the answer though, there are animals which are owned by the Queen etc. and of course firing and carrying a weapon on public land is likely to get you in trouble in the UK before you start on the aspects of whether it was lawful to kill the animal (bear in mind we have seasons for some game)

Was thinking more along the lines of other countries. You see Bear Grylls et al killing and eating bugs and fish all the time. But could he knock off a zebra if he had a legal weapon? (Fairly sure they aint protected)

I think all Swans and deer are still officially owned by the Queen and would result in typically mediaeval punishment. Squirrels, game birds and such are fair game I think.
