New kitchen and drying racks....

Been thinking of redoing my kitchen and was looking at ways to reduce (other than have a dishwasher) the clutter that is left after washing the dishes on the side next to the sink.

Luckily since the OH is finnish, she has pointed me in the direction of drying cabinets that are located above the sink, like thus:







the only thing i can find that is similar in the uk is from ikea:

but it looks a bit crap and i would like a better one....

So i thought i would open this up to the collective knowledge of PH, can i simply strip out a cupboard and find a drying rack and attach it inside to create the same effect or does someone have a better idea other than the ikea job or a dishwasher?

Can't you make your own? Not really much difference from a standard cabinet.

Just make sure that it isn't MDF or chipboard which do horrible things when left damp continuously.

In one of my flats I used to have a wall mounted drainer.

It was the Grundtal range from Ikea.
It's basically a steel pole that mounts to wall or under cabinet then you hang a (foldable) drainer off it.

I had mine hung right over the sink in a small windowless kitchen and it worked very well.

Those racks in cupboards are a Euro thing, we had them in our place in France and although I'd agree it gets rid of the visual clutter, it annoyed me as ours was thoughtfully hung over the work surface rather than the sink area!

Stopped using it after about a week of being in the place.

so what do you recommend making it out of?

Quite happy to get the rest of the kitchen made up ane then get an extra cabinet door and then get a special cabinet made that is waterproof.

They dont seem to stay that wet, its just means that you have 2/3 levels to dry the pots on and then once dry move them to the original location that is for them.

I just like the none clutter look after washing and letting the pots air dry and the fact i can get rid of the bloody dish rack i have, stupid... stupid bit of kit, that if loaded up, likes to fall apart at will....

with the dishwasher, since there is only 2 people in the fact it would take 3-4 days maybe longer to have a full load and that is disgusting waiting that time and the finnish dishwasher would try to extract my balls from my body if i suggested that she get her arse in gear and start doing it properly

So you spend all the time putting things in a cupboard only to remove them when they have water marks on them to re-wash then to put them into more cupboards.


Seems like an excellent idea to me!


Wash up as you go along and avoid the expense
