We only have 2.5 bedrooms in our little semi, and 2 children (aged 2.5 and 8 months).
In order to capitalise on space, we see bunk beds as a great option. What age would you consider letting a littlun on the top bunk? Clearly 2.5 is too young (and 8 months is out of the question, she's only just standing!)

I'm thinking the same.
My oldest is 3.5. He can do impressive things in the playground, although he's not usually half-asleep at the time.
Presumably it just needs the right design to prevent fall-outs. If the bottom bunk was on the floor, the top one would be only a couple of feet up, and you could stick storage above it.
A doctor once told me "never drop your baby from above your own head height". I think they're pretty robust.
eta: I've seen bunks with a slide coming down from the top bunk. Problem solved!

We wanted to give our little-un more space in his bedroom so bought one of those cabin beds for him. It's like a top bunk with cupboards below. We were very concerned though that he was only just 3yo at the time (4 now), so we planned to always be there whenever he needed to go up and down however after the first couple of times he proved so confident and competent we've left him to it.

Did the cabin bed thing, but stick clear of the 2.5ft wide ones - they don't last... then moved onto a solid wood bunk bed - brilliant, after 6 months they wanted seperate rooms again - but still had a full size bed each, a year further on and they want to share again (in the smallest room) using the bigger room as a playroom.
Flexible and economical.
But in agreement with some others - don't put any child under 5 on the top bunk, it's not the ability to climb up there, it's the falling out in the middle of the night & the bed wetting - it goes through and bottom bunk gets a golden shower.
