Send it, no problem. Have done so many times, both ways, as I like to carry my leatherman on me, but you can't take it on planes with you, and by the time you realize this, the luggage has already been checked!!!

Only problem would be if you included a dwarf in the package...

Unless you encounter the divots that I did at LAX who completely ignored it hanging off the outside of my carryon bag hehe

Or Heathrow at T1 and T5 last year. Both times in my carry on bag.

It makes you wonder what someone determined and skillful can get through rather than some muppet still half asleep at 6am who has just forgotten to put it in their checked baggage.

Sad, isn't it. And to be honest, I don't know what they think you could do with a leatherman. Sure, you could stab someone, or you could perhaps carve out a piece of the food tray to make a bigger stabbing tool, or you could perhaps cut through some non-essential wiring around the seat or in the back of the bathroom cabinets...but that's about it.

You certainly wouldn't get very far if you (and say, seven of your friends) set about disassembling stuff. You'd wreak far more damage grabbing a pot of boiling water in the galley and burning a few people. At least, for a short while until the water ran out or cooled down and your fellow passengers jumped on you and beat you to a pulp.

Now, if you were in the few types of planes that have the elevator to downstairs, and managed to somehow get downstairs like Kurt Russell and his team in that cool movie, you could bring the plane down...I think. I don't really know about this, but I suspect that slicing through a thick bundle of wires would do it, as the ValueJet crash in the Florida everglades happened after the pilots were unable to control the plane because a fire burnt through the electric cables. But, you could do that with the cutlery from first class, various small scissors that they do allow you to carry on, etc., etc. You wouldn't need a Leatherman per se.

Illusion of security. That's all it is.

I carry about 15 kilos of tools, which sometimes have a knife in, various bits which can be deadly weapons in the hold of aircraft.

I can't see one being sent as cargo being a problem.

Dave!

I understand what you are saying but didn't the 9/11 hijackers take over the place using box cutters? I know which one I'd prfer in a knife fight!

Yes, my point is that you ban one thing, they will be on to the next. This is a pointless exercise. If box cutters were banned, they would have figured out some other way to achieve their goal, just like you or I could with 15 seconds of thinking.

Anyone trained in martial arts could have defeated a box-cutter-wielding nutjob with a seat cushion. That kind of attack can never happen again, with box cutters or any other small weapon. Even a handgun only has 6-14 bullets, a determined public could and would force hijackers to discharge them all till they ran out. I believe that the public would do this nowadays.

Even if they don't, banning leatherman tools certainly does not enhance safety.

I entirely agree that they would have found some other way to achieve the goal. Making weapons out of seemingly inocuous objects appears to be a mainstay of American Super Max Prisons.

This fact doesn't mean that we shouldn't stop weapons being taken on board aircraft in the same way that we know crimes will continue to be committed by those who are determined but I don't believe we should repeal all laws.

Making it more difficult to take weapons on board will stop those less determined to hijack a plane which has to be a good thing.

I took a 6 inch razor sharp fishing knife through once in my carry on bag.

Forgot it was there.

Had no problems at all.

Although Mrs Tee did get her straighteners taken apart!!!! hehe

I’ve never written straighteners before, is that how you spell it?

Sure, but toos are not weapons any more than knitting needles are. both are/were banned, and that is just silly. In the US at least, they go beyond retarded...not allowing people to board if they have arabic writing on t-shirts, or, if they look middle-eastern, some white dumbfk simply has to bleat how he feels "uncomfortable" and they are yanked off the plane. This does not enhance safety, it merely gives power to retards.

You can google news if you think I am exaggerating in the least bit.

The problem with tools like a Leatherman is that they are not meant as weapons but are actually pretty effective as such. I don't know about all of them but the knives on mine lock and are over 3 inches long. I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of that.

I think I could cope with a T-Shirt that had arabic writing on it though! hehe

Without getting into a 50 page discussion about ninja throwing stars and all, when a terrorist has a box knife to a hostesses throat, from behind, barking orders, you won't find a hero onboard big enough to take him down.

Would you be the one to rush him with your pillow, and get the girl killed?

On some airlines they GIVE you stainless steel knives and forks to eat with. With a small file, legal to carry onboard, I could spend ten minutes in the toilet and put an edge and point on that stainless knife plenty sharp enough to slice open a throat.

Before Sept. 11, no one would have rushed such a person, simply because the danger was to her, and there was a chance/hope of talking the person out of doing anything horrific.

Since Sept. 11, however, the logic is that the entire airliner is probably going to be used in some sort of suicide mission, and the lives on board are as good as lost, unless there is a miracle. So, it's a choice of:
1. Let the terrorists get away with it and be killed in the process
2. Let the terrorists not get away with it, don't allow the airliner to be used for some horrific act, and be killed
3. Have a remote chance of surviving after taking some damage.

In that light, I would be damned if I was going to let the fu@kers get away with anything. Box knives or leathermen tools or other stabbing implements? I would use a pillow, try to talk others into helping for a couple of minutes, and then grab whatever I could use as a weapon and to extend my range, and start flailing like a madman. I know the stewardess would likely suffer horrific cuts and quite possibly, die.

If it was a madman acting alone, the old rules would apply and I would likely not interfere.

I would think most people would do the same today?
