What do people really think of Liverpool?

After reading a fair few threads on here there seems to be a bit of animosity towards the place.
Usually with the scousers wig / hubcaps / thief jokes etc etc.
I live near to the place and have never found it as bad as some people make out, in fact it's IMO it's much better than some of the other cities I have visited.
Just seems funny that the old sterotypes are still rolled out every time the place is mentioned.
(I'm not a scouser BTW)

I visited a good few years ago as I was thinking of going to the Polytechnic there as it was one of the few that offered the course I was looking at.
I was greeted after getting off the train and walking 100yds up the platform by some alky/beggar/tramp sort that decided I looked like an out-of-towner to bother and hassle for money.
He wouldn't go away when I asked him and then told him to, but started to front me up and stand in my way blocking my path. He ended up getting launched over a bin to applause from bystanders. Not a great first impression at all and sadly, one that stayed with me. I never went back there.
(That said, I'm originally from the South Wales valleys - hardly a great place to live either).

I've visited a few times but never lived there. I've found the people to be friendly and proud, a bit like the Geordies really.
I must admit my views of Liverpool are influenced by the often quoted high crime statistics and the accent which I find a bit abrasive.
Are crime rates actually not that high there then?

You're a glutton for punishment.
I'm a 'scouser', but even I find that some of the 'ladies' accents are awful.
You walk up to them and ask if they want a drink, and all you hear is a harpy-like screech and it could be "yerwot" or "alright" - it nearly makes my ears bleed sometimes.
It gets worse the louder they get!!!
I now tend to go to the 'real ale' pubs instead of the bars & clubs as I can get a pint for £2 instead of paying £5 for a bottle.
Trying to get a taxi at 3am is a pain too!
The best thing is that everything is within a 10 minute walking radius - means if one place is dead/packed/closed then you've not far to go to get to something else.
I've never had a problem going out in Liverpool, but neither have I had a problem in most other cities. But I also tend not to walk around Croxteth or Norris Green (not got a problem with Toxteth and Dingle as the family were from there anyway).
I've also had less problems with car crime in Liverpool than I have elsewhere - 1 broken window and 1 attempted break in in Liverpool and 6 or 7 attempts throughout the rest of the UK (twice in a posh village called Prestbury in Cheshire).
