Which TV? Not a massive Plasma jobbie - just a simple 24" TV

Our CRT TV is on its way out - it's nothing complex - it's not big or clever but it is dying. It's a 21 inch TV and not much bigger is what will fit into the TV gap - I don't want a big behemoth TV for the room as the room isn't exactly huge and the TV has to go in to the corner on a prebuilt shelf.

What I'm after is some kind of advice/guide for a 24 inch TV (TFT?) that isn't hugely expensive (money's a bit tight), isn't something that gives me bragging rights (it's a TV and the fact that it's a "Siny Bravia" isn't something that bothers me) and is possibly freeview. (Would I be wise to consider a DVD playing TV too?).

Also, I might be considering getting an XBOX in the future - but that also depends on money (so probably not) - what effect does that have on my choice of TV?

They tend to come in 22" and 26" flavours. LG do a decent 22" for around £200-250 I think.

For XBox you will be wanting a component or HDMI input (depending on version) both of which any HD-Ready stickered TV will have.

All the ones you haven't heard of.

My mum kept buying these poxy things nobody had ever heard of "Techwood" "Polaroid" "samsung" all ste and broke just out of warranty.

Have a look on ebay for something local that you can pick up and pay cash for. I was in the market for a 26" LCD a while ago, and found a guy only 20 minutes away. He was selling a Polaroid telly, which is apparently an okay make - gives me a good TV picture and the xbox looks great.

Best of all, it was only a year old, and only set me back £190.

If the shelf height is the issue, a 26" 16:9 widescreen will be almost exactly the same height as a 21" 4:3 traditional screen. Obviously you need to factor in the size of the surround and any stand as well.
