Need a second car to do the daily rounds, needs ideay to have 4 doors, be cheap to insure, run and be economical. What do you all run ?
There was a league table of cheapest cars to run out a while back, can't remember where it was, but the Yaris won, taking into account residuals, servicing, petrol, etc. I had one as a courtesy car a while back and actually liked it. The steering was so remote it was like a PlayStation game, and I'm not keen on that much body roll but, other than that, it was perfect for pottering around in... good residuals, great fuel economy, as reliable as it gets, etc.
I like to have a bit of variation in my driving experiences, as well as my Cerbie I run a 1988 Landrover 90 which my Mrs won't be seen dead in. Good for the winter mornings and trailering the Cerb home when she breaks down, not fast, handles like a boat and smells of wet dog....the landrover not the Mrs....but reliable, cheap, the insurance people pay me to drive it, well recomended
When I bought the Cerbera, my wife had an old but reliable Astra.
As she likes them ( why? ) I bought her a newer one
and retained her old one as a 'spare'.
So far, apart from when I had 'the issues', I've not
used the Astra and with the tax renewal just in,
wondering if it's worth £300 with insurance.
Might just hire a car if the Cerb is off the road for
any reason.

You dont want something totally scummy I assume.
I would go for a Golf, maybe a Mk2 GTI with 4 doors.
A couple of grand or less will pick up a late one with full sh and great condition.
Cheap to insure and cheap to run. And not embarrasing - unless it is lowered etc.. I also found my GTi would do well over 30mpg.
I know have a Fiat Cinq sporting - R reg, £800, £200 to insure, 40 mpg, nippy, easy to park... BUT I wouldnt want to be in a crash in it.

Think the Yaris option is possiable but really wanted to pay less than a grand. Other options I am thinking about are MX3, MX6, Escort RS Turbo, Fiat coupe, but should really be thinking more Yaris, Clio etc
...you can buy a Fiat Coupe for less than a grand??
good effort, get me one while you're there - 20V Turbo in bugatti blue will do nicely for the Asda run!
cheers

To balance out Optimax usage I have purchased a 50cc scooter, so for shorter journey's and weather permitting I get 80 mpg, road tax £15, insurance for year £80 fully comp.
Bit of a bind when sun shinning, which to use.
Cerbie wins most days though.
Wife has Ford KA should a back up be required.

Mark, if you're looking at that sort of budget, then I would definately look at a 1.6 205 GTI.
I bought a G reg 1.6 good bodywork and plenty of history for £750. Insurance £200 fully comp and 35ish mpg.
205's also tend to rust a lot less than Ford equivalents.
Buy a 1.6 as the 1.9 tends to be outside this price for a good one & are more sort after.
I can highly recommend it. Do a search on autotrader.

Ah, right, if you're wanting cheap....
I'd suggest the old Rover 200 series (1990-1996 ish) - but not with a K-Series engine (the 1.4 or the 1.8). The 1.6 Honda engine should last for ever, and the 2.0 T-Series was great too. You'll be able to pick up a 216 for a few hundred quid, and even a 220 Turbo Coupe can be had for £2k or so (200BHP, 0-60 in 6.2
). That's all being a bit biased with my personal taste, though. If you're not too bothered about image, you really can't beat a Mondeo or Vectra for a cheap 2nd hand bargain at around the £2k mark (and they won't cost that much to maintain as they'd be quite new, and designed for higher mileages). If you're after something smaller & cheaper then an old Polo or a 205. Personally, it'd be the 220 Turbo every time - cost me peanuts to keep, would top 150MPH, and kept me nice & safe in a 60-odd MPH accident.
