New Years Eve - Durham to Whitby - 1hour 20 minutes. Air temperature minus 2 degrees.

NO WAY ARE WE PUTTING THE ROOF ON!

My wife hasn't a large head, just two hats on.

I hope you're all enjoying the weather! Happy New Year everyone!

Yes, that's a goat.

Drove into work when it was -5 the other morning. I had to spend the journey sitting on alternate hands to get some feeling back in them!

went to the local Lotus meet on Saturday, had to alternate hands in the vents to defrost them on the way back.Roof tucked firmly in the boot. Also learnt that if you do squirt the windscreen to get rid of the salt mess,it will freeze and because the roof is off, it will not defrost,so you get half vision.

There's something really good about driving in cold, cold but bright conditions with the roof off. A bit like driving along on summer nights with the roof off but in a different way.
One of my favourite days driving in my Elise was with the roof off through a frost covered Cornish and Devon landscape with clear blue skies and the sun shining. Rude not too!!

The other goat is a master photographer.

Tipper's right. Rude not too, that's why i bought an elise! If i didn't like roof down motoring i'd have bought an exige.

There's only so many days when we travel without the dog so can use the elise for longer journeys, and it was actually really enjoyable taking on the climate and winning. (so to speak)

The most satisfying part was seeing all the convertibles you normally see with roof down at the faintest glimmer of sun, (diesel A4 cab's, 206 cc's etc) all having the roof's up.

I don't know why but that made me smirk.

Any colder and it would be getting too parky though, i wouldn't fancy -5 or less with the top off.

There is also something to be said for being able to feel the steering wheel in a tactile sports car. What is the difference between sticking a comfortable roof on the car or sticking 2 hats on your head to stop the air with a wind chill factor of minus 60 - 70 so you can feel your face.
Not sure I see the point. You buy a "practical" sports car and make it uncomfortable. Why not just buy a caterfield, get a better drive ( not that you would know with those gloves) and have a damn good reason to have the roof off.
I used to put the hard top on at the last resort and think the frosty blat was great, pah, if you have to wear 2 hats then it isn't fun, it is plain cold and nasty.
Hard top goes on in October and will stay on untill April at the earliest.

1. It was just fun Gooby!
2. As for wearing leather gloves reducing the feeling of a 'tactile' sports car - It never harmed Sterling Moss
3. I wasn't trying to set lap times anyway, just enjoying a drive with a car full of wife and luggage/booze for new year
4. It wasn't any less comfortable that it would be in the middle of summer with the roof off, just had a few extra layers on
5. My wife wouldn't drive to the shops in the rain in a Caterfield, otherwise i would have one
6. I don't have a hard top!

Seriously, it was just a bit of fun, the same as you get in summer when you have the roof off, just a bit colder.

Anyhow, it's warming up now. 5 degrees by the weekend, my wife will be able to travel with just the one hat on! biggrin

Cheers for all the positive comments everyone!
