So full of holes....but an excellent movie
There is just something about the F-14 as compared to other aircraft
I think it is a bit like the following:
F-22: Veyron: clinical, focussed, exceptional machine
F-15: McLaren F1: goes like stink, can carry a mate for a supersonic zoom climb
F-14: F50...raw, noisy, cantankerous beast but just has that "something"

Actually, I should havejust gone for "top gun gay". Much quicker and better (so to speak) results 
Trust you "curious" types to remember those bits of the film.

Missiles
Being too close to missiles, therefore switching to guns.
Aircraft carriers. They're proper manly. Armed to the teeth, eith REALLY BIG engines. Don't turn or stop, and the one in the film is untreliable. Thats just like a TVR, which is the MOST MANLY CAR EVER.
Gatling guns in fact. Thats like normal guns, but MUCH STRAIGHTER.
Riding a motorbike without a helmet, because you're too manly to need more than some aviators as protection.
You sort of see some side boob at one point.
