Really short network and ethernet cable.....

I need a really short ethernet cable and a really short network cable - less than 20cm each infact prob only about 10 cm each.

Any ideas where i can get them?

Everywhere seem to assume you need metres and metres of the things.....

unless you're arnie*, you can just buy some cat5e, and some plugs. crimping is easier than you might think, as well

already got a long cable.... can i just snip that down to size, pull the connector of and stick it back on? do i need a special tool to crimp the cable?

It's a cripmp, and you do need a tool. You can't reuse an old end, either. the good news is that CPC or Maplin can sell you the tool, bits and cable for less than a 1m patch lead would be in PC world.

Oh, and skynet is good, but it's not the one

You can just cut it, strip back all the wires, splice together and tape back up with electrical tape. That's how my HTPC is wired to the router upstairs, works fine and has done for over a year, bit of a bodge though.

I'm sure any networking company will make one for you for a few quid, if not just buy the cat5e, some RJ45 crimps and a crimp tool, bob's your uncle you have a lead and also 304.8 meters of spare cable in case you make a mistake!

Just buy a crimp tool and a few connectors (i.e. more than you need, as you'll need some practice I bet) and make them from your existing cable.

I'm making a dwarf computer network. Obviosuly the distances between things are much smaller....

ok no i'm not - i'm trying to tidy the cables up behind the TV where the router / xbox / modem all sit and just don't need yards and yards of cable

I did have a tool I could lend you, until security at Aberdeen airport confiscated it as a dangerous weapon (I kid you not).

I'll have a look in the comms room and see what I have lying around, I know I have some pointlessly short ones. If you make them yourself, it does take a little practice your first one might not work...

Just make sure you match the colour pattern at each end and that each strand goes into the part of the plug you think it has.
