already got a long cable.... can i just snip that down to size, pull the connector of and stick it back on? do i need a special tool to crimp the cable?
You will need a crimping tool.I am not back in the office until Friday but I'll make you one up if needed. PM me.
Not sure what you mean though about an ethernet cable and a network cable. Do you just need a simple cat5 cable?

And the difference between the two is?Just buy a crimp tool and a few connectors (i.e. more than you need, as you'll need some practice I bet) and make them from your existing cable.
Or just PM me your address and I'll make a couple up this weekend and stick them in the post.

Thanks also to Mouseymousey - but yeah 50 cm will be too long.

unless you're arnie*, you can just buy some cat5e, and some plugs. crimping is easier than you might think, as well
since this was a geeky question, there is an equally geeky movie reference here. Free pair of white socks for the first person to spot it
Because he doesn't need a terminator? I'm too young for Thinnet since this was a geeky question, there is an equally geeky movie reference here. Free pair of white socks for the first person to spot it

Can I ask what you need them for?
And likewise I am quite happy to make up leads for people if they want them.
I'm making a dwarf computer network. Obviosuly the distances between things are much smaller....And likewise I am quite happy to make up leads for people if they want them.

ok no i'm not - i'm trying to tidy the cables up behind the TV where the router / xbox / modem all sit and just don't need yards and yards of cable
Once again thanks for all the very kind offers.
Cheers
Dan
I did have a tool I could lend you, until security at Aberdeen airport confiscated it as a dangerous weapon (I kid you not).
I'll have a look in the comms room and see what I have lying around, I know I have some pointlessly short ones. If you make them yourself, it does take a little practice your first one might not work...
Just make sure you match the colour pattern at each end and that each strand goes into the part of the plug you think it has.
