Toyota MR2 Roadster

Any owners here?
The Wife wants one. From what I can make out early models suffered engine problems. In 03 they were revised and facelifted with a 6 speed box, so thats the age I am after.

Any views? am I right?
(Please dont recommend other cars, she is a Woman and wants a black one!)

he`s never had any problems with it.
Sod all room in `em though!

Engine issue you refer to is, I presume, the 'pre-cat' issue. There's plenty about that on the MR2ROC that others have linked to. It might also be worth having a look at the US-centric www.spyderchat.com for an awful lot of information.

Thing I am finding is they vary in price. There was one I just missed out on 03 plate in black only 13000 miles £3500 at a Merc dealer in Scotland. Most are 5-6 grand and I wont pay that, some jokers are asking 7 grand.

My wife had one from new for 3 years (01 model). Good little car great fun in the dry, can be VERY twitchy in the wet, great care required if greasy/bumpy in wet. My mrs spun hers twice and she is in no way a petrolhead or fast driver. So look out for accident damage. I think the later ones were better but they all have no traction control, are light, have quite a quick steering rack and are quite stiffy sprung. All these are things which make it fun, which is good, just be extra smooth in the wet and you'll be fine.

Decent rubber and smoother throttle control generally helps against spinning too

Any MR car is going to lively at the rear if you try drive it like a FWD

Well its a main dealer who advertised on a main website called autotrader, so its true enough and if you look its all they are worth, Hence the sales. This makes me more confident not to pay silly money for one.
You will only disagree if you actually have one, or do the homework and see. i am telling the truth!
if it had 130000 mile on it wouldnt be in this dealership and be worth next to fk all.
Its gone anyway ......as soon as it came up for sale so that says it all.
I will buy one but it has to be black, with red interior, later shape, and cheap as chips.

Thats why they are still for sale and the one I mentioned had sold!

Realisticaly they are still overpriced others are way overpriced.

Give your brother £2500 now, and save him the dispair of trying to sell an old shape MR2 at a time when they are worth fk all (and thats the truth)

It's not just pre-cats on the older cars. It shares the 1.8 VVTi engine with other Toyota models e.g the Avensis. There is a known problem with oil consumption due I believe to the design of the piston which can lead to blocked oilways.

I think the post 2003 cars had the redesigned internals.

That's a good point and one I had forgotten about. I'm presuming that there is no longer any goodwill from Toyota on this particular issue i.e. all the cars effected are outside any extended warranty that may have existed?

Don't think much of the new MR2, much prefer my Mk2 MR2 T-bar, which, might I add has done 110,000 miles and still has the original exhaust and clutch - now thats toyota reliability and build quality

Have you driven the newer style mr2? from all reports and from folk that had MK2s, they have said that the mk3 out handles the mk2 but maybe down on overall straight line acceleration.
