Hi All

I have just bought myself a Canon 50mm f/1.4 lens from what seemed to be a reputable ebay seller. The ebay advertisement promised full UK/Europe warranty, with warranty documentation included. The lens arrived, packaged in Canon box with serial number sticker etc. However there was no warranty card included.

I have gone back to the seller, who is claiming that all that is required is to register the warranty on Canon's website (http://www.canon.co.uk/Support/Warranty/index.asp) and then that the invoice is all that is required for a warranty claim.

Looking through Canon's terms and conditions on their website, they state "EWS (European Warranty Sytem) service free of charge may be obtained only against presentation of this warranty card together with the original invoice/cash ticket issued to the customer by the retailer".

Can anyone confirm that the lens should indeed have included a warranty card, and has anyone had experience of claiming on a Canon warranty without a warranty card?

Cheers
Greg

Hi Greg, You'vbe really answered your own question becuase it's clear what Canon's requirements are in the event of a claim. Ebay is full of these sellers that go on about worldwide warranties and seller warranties which often are useless.

I am always swapping my gear, trying stuff out and buying and selling gear, hopefully to make a little profit along the way.

However for gear that I will want to keep I have made up my mind to buy from a reputable UK supplier and have a proper warranty and initial returns policy.

BTW it's probbaly unlikely you'll have aproblem with that lens.

At a guess - it's a lens that's been returned by a buyer who filled the card in and sent it off. It migh tbe interesting to see if the serial number has already been registered.

Lesson is - if you want to save a tenner by using eBay there can be a downside. If you want a totally pukka lens with cast-iron UK warranty, go to somewhere reputable like Warehouse Express and pay the extra tenner.

If it's any comfort, it's highly unlikely that a 50mm lens is going to go wrong in a year smile

If it helps, I've just sent my Sigma 10-20 back for a lookover and they were more interested in me being first owner with purchase proof and date more than warranty card (which I have, it's blank)

Thanks for the replies guys.

For other's reference in case this comes up in a search later on, having read the replies and gotten concerned, I have just called the official Canon repair centre here in Dublin. They have assured me that they don't get too bothered about the Warranty Cards, and that as long as I have an invoice on letterhead with a date on it, then they will have no problem repairing it if something goes wrong.

I can go back to enjoying my new lens now (which is producing great pictures by the way!).

Cheers
