It's only one noise, but it's starting to drive me nuts nuts

Engine started squeaking at tickover on cold days, then went away when the car warmed up or the revs increased, so I thought it could be a loose/ slipping belt.

Now it squeaks all the time, so I'm thinking something more mechanical. Tensioner?, water pump/ alternator bearing?.

Anyone else with something similar under the bonnet?, or able to have an educated guess at how to get rid of it please

Probably a squeeky bearing?
Maybe some a tiny bit of wd40 in the right places?

I'll try it, but I fear something worse as when cold now the squeaking is more of a 'significant squealing' idea

Yep, tensioner pulley or idler pulley.

WD40- the devil's curse on engineers.

It's a *water dispersant* (clue in the name) and not a lubricant. In fact, it's acts as a degreaser (I use it to clean up oily bits like undertrays and diffusers) and will cause no end of problems if you start spraying here and there.

WHS

Id be tempted to use 3in1 spray oil but as soon as you have found the culprit replace it!. Most likely the idle pulley as already said. You could stick a long screw driver onto the mount for the tensioner assembly and see if you can hear any noises from it...? old engineering trick.

I had exact same symptoms (05 CV8), and have just had Motorbodies replace the aircon belt tensioner pulley under warranty. Now I'm happy again

I thought you got the car back the other day? I've usually got a tensioner or idler in stock if they can't supply one.
