Right 2 Repair Campaign

I just wanted to bring your attention to the Right 2 Repair Campaign (having carried out a search I can see that you're aware of the situation already).

For those who aren't aware, currently, you have the right to service and repair your vehicle wherever you wish. But, in 2010, that right could be removed.

At the moment you have the right to service or repair your car wherever you wish. You might take it back to the manufacturer. Or maybe you prefer to take your vehicle to an independant repairer.

But, in 2010, when key European legislation is due to disappear, so will your freedom of choice.

Put simply, if the only place you're able to service or repairs yoru car is at a manufacturer dealership or manufacturer approved franchise, prepare to be hit hard in the pocket.

In fact, research shows that you can expect your car service and repairs costs to be double.

This only applies for vehicles that are still under manufactures warranty.

I may be wrong but doesnt also include that manufacturers dont have to disclose/release any of the diagnostic and design details so that parts and diagnostic S/W will only be available from them.

It sounds a lot like a Brussels carve up !!

Yes you're correct, but many manufacturers are doing this already with things like software updates and security info.

At the moment if you wish to buy technical data from a main dealer they have to sell it at cost price due to block exemption. Also original parts do not need to be used if repairing elsewhere they need to be of comparable quality.

I've seen this a few times, and their website, but I'm still none the wiser as to what the problem is.

1. Only applies to cars under manufacturers warranty (many "repair" parts & labour costs covered anyway)
2. Block Exemption laws mean warranty is not invalidated as long as proper parts etc. are used a *vat?* registered mechanic does the work?

So from what I can tell, the Block Exemption rules are being scrapped???? i.e. back to what it was before a few years ago?

Vote with your feet. Don't buy new. I'm sure this is just what they need in the current climate.
