Hmm....Possible M5 Clutch issue
Discussion
The M5 recently had felt like the clutch was slipping when setting of in 1st gear from a standstill...
Took it in to my dealer today as it's covered under AUC warranty and they agreed summat isn't quite right...it only does it when the car is warmed up as well..
Not happy when they said, if they found it to be a worn clutch then I'd be footing the bill!!
Having heard of several SMG issues and the like, I expected it to be a straight warranty issue..
Anyone got any advice on what I need to say/do/print etc....it's booked in for 2 days next week...
Cars only done 39k on a 55 plate...

Private purchase but car was an AUC in May last year and warranty has transferred to me...car has been in to BMW previously for some minor warranty work...
I'm more amazed that with only 39k miles the car could have a worn clutch!! There is no evidence of clutch slip in any of the other gears....tried the old test of flooring it at low revs in a high gear and there's been no indication from that of a worn clutch...
Also I'm fully aware of some of the problems the M5 SMG has had....

39k is not an inconsiderable amount. Did the dealer mention how long it should last?
If I recall correctly, BMW uses Sachs clutches which - with due care - should last upto 100,000 miles. I know a man with a VW Passat, it's done 150,000 miles, plenty of town driving and it's never had a clutch change. He's had the car from new.
But those cars dont have 507bhp to deal with. I appreciate what youre saying, they should last significantly longer, but they cant even start to be compared.
Its the same with the old V8 M5. With care can do 100k miles, abused it will last less than 5k.
I, and it would seem we, do not know the expected life expectancy of the clutch on the SMG 3 system.

40k on a clutch in a 507bhp car.
You've done very well, and I imagine you'll be paying for a replacement.
Might be tempted to agree normally, but it was sent out as an AUC car in May 08 with 32k miles and has only covered 7k since that time, must have been signs back then if there was going to be a clutch wear issue....hence why I'm a little peeved and will involve BMW GB for their input...You've done very well, and I imagine you'll be paying for a replacement.
Got a pretty good relationship with the dealer anyway so might not even be an issue yet...will update next Friday when it's sorted...

Your best bet is the dealer relationship. Good luck with it.
Sorry Berry but I think you need to take a realistic view.
Firstly you dont know who owned your car before you. Sadly none of us can retrospectively interrogate the previous owners to establish how they treated the car. It may have been driven hard or even abused. That is the risk we all take.
From having a look around M5board, they write that several of their cars have been through clutches. Some as quickly as 6k miles. They report that the launch control function and hard 1st gear starts wears them the quickest. This would of course make sense and a worn, slipping clutch is manifesting itself with this similar action of slipping the most when it has to get nearly 2 tons rolling from standstill.
The V8 M5 clutch is made from cheese, but you can to a degree control wear by being gentle with it. Hard driving in a manual car doesnt always wear the clutch out, unless you like burnouts.
The clutch, being computer operated in the E60 is out of your hands, and if it is going you are seeing the initial stages. There is no way the dealer would have know that when you bought the car without taking it apart to physically look.
Leave it too long and it will slip in every gear and eventually when you are just going uphill. You do however have the advantage of the AUC scheme and I wish you the best of luck.

No way! I had my clutch replaced under warranty. Give your dealer a hard time. Mine had done 14k.
Avoid M5board. It's full of Americans who do multiple launch controls and then wonder why the clutch has gone.
Unfortunaltey the previous owner may have done just that. The first owner is a lot less likely to be as sympathetic as we are. Hate to sound pessimistic and all that chaps. Avoid M5board. It's full of Americans who do multiple launch controls and then wonder why the clutch has gone.

Cant they download the LC data from the key or something? The results of that may determine the outcome.
