Best roads in Devon
Discussion
I'm no expert on Devon roads but I seem to remember reading something about the road between Oakhampton and Barnstable? It looks quite intreaging on a map. I also enjoyed the road south of Oakhampton towards Tavistock last week, even though I was in the GF's Corsa
it put a grin on my face

Today I did Crediton to Barnstaple on the A377 which was great as it was strangely quiet going north! I then went along the A39 to Bideford and south to Oakhampton which was a superb road, but it was full of f'ing ignorant muppets doing no more than 40mph with loads of of traffic behind them!!

Hope you had fun in-between the dawdlers. It's crazy around where I live. Lots of roads which were 50-60 MPH limit have all been slashed to 30-40 MPH, with the obligitory scamera warning signs. These roads are not built-up areas, but because there are a handful of farms & country houses it is assumed there maybe pedestrians or children around? A complete joke.
LOL I did take a couple wrong turns myself, the B road I was looking for wasnt sign posted meaning few stops to look at the map and get stick behind people id overtaken!

I was going nuts at the dawdlers, theres just no bloody need to go so slow and hold people up!! If I feel like dawdling im quit happy to make space for people to pass, but thats too hard to think of for some people.Everywhere! Grew up on the Devon-Somerset border and every time I go back there I can't help think how much better just driving to the shops is than hooning up near London.
Anyway, being a bit more constructive...
The B356 from the A303 into Crewkerne is quite fun (er, come to think of it that's in Somerset...) The roads connecting through to Beaminster are good fun, as is the road that runs through Marshwood to Lyme Regis.
Virtually all the roads across Dartmoor are fun if you're prepared to take a flexible approach to the blanket 40mph limit (and wandering sheep).
Will have a think...

Chris71, please list them. Have just bought a barn down there so really looking forward to exploring the great roads around Okehampton.
Can't remember off the top of my head, but basically the main roads across the moor - from Lakeland to Princetown is pretty good in places from memory. Only out of season though - as with the rest of the area things take a turn for the worst when the caravans turn up.You might find some un-hoonably narrow ones, but you won't find many dull roads if you take an afternoon to go out exploring. And when you do I shall be deeply deeply jealous.

The B3165 From Axminster to the A303 is a great road, especially the section near Marshwood that weaves between the trees. Dartmoor is also fun if you can find an animal and tourist free area where you can also see far enough ahead. I quite like the area up around Haytor, especially when it starts getting dark and a lot quieter.Anyway, being a bit more constructive...

Griffdude, I will try that road soon as it looks promising on the map

I grew up in Dalwood (near Axminster) and went to school in Crewkerne, so I spent a lot of time driving over there when home from uni etc. The alternative route (the Chard road and then through Perry Street to Cricket St Thomas) can be quite entertaining on occasions to. And I have many fond memories of the S bend after the bridge coming out of Axminster to join the A35 - that and the A35 Bridport roundabout taught me all I know about lift off oversteer.
Ahh... Happy days! Enjoy it whilst you can. Driving in London sucks as a result - the sort of roads I deliberately seek out here are less fun than driving out get groceries was back home.

Another vote for the 377 Crediton -> Barnstaple, that used to be my route for a hoon whenever I was bored (Used to live in Crediton).
Crediton to Bickleigh (the Tiverton road) is also another great one, was a bit scary on the 125 but in the car it was great. It was always good fun to blat down there.
The A396 from Cowley Bridge to Bickleigh is also quite a decent blast up through Stoke Canon and Rewe. But only really later in the evenings as there's nowhere really to overtake.
And finally, the backroads from Crediton to Tedburn St Mary, through Fordton then Venny Tedburn. Again best at night but they're always pretty empty.

Hi Dan, How long ago did you live in Crediton, i'm also a resident of good ole Kirton, i did Crediton to Bickleigh this morning, the sun was out so it was off with the roof and foot down, the Speed Six de-catted sounds great in third gear going up towards Windwistle, one of the few overtaking spots, my quickest time Rugby Club to Fishermans Cott is 9 mins not bad for a 8 mile hoon on that twisty.

Ah not just me then, I love that little section leading to the A35 and that roundabout is great for lift off oversteer as its so wide and quiet late at night. I also like the A358 from Axmouth all the way to Chard (apart from the 30 and 40 zones), theres some great sweepers when you get a rare clear run. Ahh... Happy days! Enjoy it whilst you can. I drove the B3212 from Exeter all the way across Dartmoor to Yelverton today which was brilliant fun. Well Apart from following a muppet in an MX5 who clearly thought his car couldnt corner at more than 35 mph!! The 40,ph limit over the moor can be frustrating but can be stretched a bit where you can see far enough ahead to worry about animals in the road..
