Anyone have any idea at all what the bush is from that sits inside the tube welded to the chassis that the steering shaft runs through?

Mine is seriously loose and gives quite a lot of play on the steering wheel....

Is it a standard part, or am I going to have to get one made out of nylon or somesuch?

Was originally a plastic/nylon bush. Use a rose joint

Damn, they sold me a faulty rose joint. Never happened to mine but then it only gets used once a year for mot. rest of the time I find winding down the window and screaming abuse works as well

Agh, that makes sence... I have an adjustment clamp for the column height inside the footwell... so no adjuster on the mid-shaft support.

I dont supose you have any photos of the rosejoint setup? That would be a good idea, or simply machine a new nylon sleeve....

Guess what I've got a nylon bush on my early 1600M, the horn works perfectly off the original steering wheel horn button(when the steering lock is on) passes the MOT every time;)

Duncan.. Just use a micrometre to measure diameter of shaft and ID of bush on chassis, consult one of the many catalogues for rose joints and away you go. Beware though, the horn might work. sTeVeR
