Right then - i've got the following:

AV Amp / Recevier (not scart compatible)
Surround speakers
PVR - Scart only connection
TV (hdmi compatible)
Xbox.

I also have the following:

Component leads for the xbox.
All Speaker leads
A few scart cables.
One HDMI - HDMI cable.
Ariel

The speakers are not a problem. (wire into amp - job done)
The xbox is not a problem. (i don't think! - Components from xbox into amp)

But how do I connect the PVR and the TV?

Do I connect TV to Amp using HDMI - from Amp out to TV in?

The the PVR direct to the TV? Using scart?

Or do I need another lead? SCART - HDMI and then connect the PVR to the amp as well?

Any help gladly taken!

Cheers

Dan

TV to AMP via HDMI (as long as the amp will convert an analogue signal to digital)

For the PVR you need something called a SCART breakout.

If the Amp has S-Video inputs use a SCART>S-Video+Audio breakout, if it has Composite inputs use a SCART>Composite+Audio breakout.

If the amp doesnt digitise the analogue inputs you need to run either Composite or S-Video to the television from the amp as well as HDMI

Cheers Plotless - its a Onkyo TXSR506 amp. ( http://www.richersounds.com/showproduct.php?cda=sh... )

A SCART breakout? Will ASDA sell them? smile or B&Q or will I need a specialist shop?
The AMP does accept S-video and composite so will take either of those.

If the amp accepts component / RGB, you should probably use these in preference.
These will give better PQ than s-video, and certainly better than composite (the worst format).

You can get a SCART to component from here:

All those boxes do is convert from one video format to another, if the PVR only outputs composite the component video signal from the other side of that box will only be as good as composite but transported in component format.

If the PVR outputs RGB SCART then its probably best to go direct from PVR to TV and then run audio out of the TV back into the amp if you want it amplified.

Dan, the 506 doesnt format convert so you will need a connection between the amp for every input you use. So if you use 1 HDMI, 1 S-Video, 1 Component and 1 Composite input you will need the same output between the 506 and the television.

It's just a cable, not a convertor... I was assuming the PVR would output RGB or component (if not HDMI). Dan you might want to look into what is available, then pick the cable accordingly.

Plotless - do these amps not convert an analog input to digital for HDMI connection to the screen (I use a scaler for this)? Seems kind of pointless doing video switching on them at all otherwise!

If the PVR outputs RGB then the amp wont cope because RGB != Component, its similar but not the same. He's best off going direct to screen in such a situation.

The 506 doesnt format convert no, not analogue to digital or even analogue to analogue aggregation.

Hmmm - well that me well and truely confused!!!

So are you saying that if i'm using the component output from the Xbox 360 i need a component input to the tv as well? and then this scart breakout thing for the pvr to the amp then the same for the amp to the tv

So the HDMI cable from Amp to TV is useless?

Or am i barking completly up the wrong tree?

Whatever you have going into the amp, you need going out of the amp.

If you dont have any HDMI sources going in, you dont need a HDMI cable going out.

See clarification on Page 21 of your manual.

If you take the 506 back and get a 606 then that wont digitise analogue signals but it will at least convert all analogue formats to one type so if you feed it composite, s-video or component then you can watch everything on the component output.

If you go up again to the 806 then that converts everything to HDMI

I don't think i'll be upgrading (got a very good deal on this amp) so it looks like i'll be adding the extra cables!

So let me get this straight.....

Xbox - Component into the amp - so need an extra component to come out of the amp and into the TV.

PVR - Am i best of just running scart PVR to scart TV here and by passing the amp? (so if i do this do i lose the ability to use the speakers with the PVR?)

If this is the case how can i watch TV and use the speakers i've bought? or is this gonna be the HDMI tv to amp?

Component in mandates component out.

You want a stereo audio cable (red and white rcas) between the television and the amp (TV/Sat/Cable input) to amplify what the television is recieving.

This will allow the amp to amplify both freeview content and the SCART fed signal off the PVR.

Thanks for this plotloss

Gettign somewhere now!

I now have a picture on the tv, the pvr works and both output sound through the front speakers of the speaker setup - i asume rear speakers are only used when the output uses these?

However - still no picture for the xbox - component from the xbox to the component in on the amp.

Then component from the amp out to the tv in.

But nothing?

Am i missing soemthing (again?)

Cheers

Tried it set to both HDTV and normal TV - still nothing.

Just get "no signal" on the tv

How is the sound carried out of the Xbox?

On the amp there is a corresponding audio input labelled DVD (or whatever component input you are using). There is one for both analogue stereo audio and digital optical/coaxial whatever the XBox uses to carry audio, run that into the audio input that corresponds with the video input you are using.

Sorted now!

You were right again! Th einput was going into "CD" just needed to select that on the amp.

Superb now.

Thanks very very much for all your help today Plotloss, really appreciated.
