Hi all.

Going to replace the air filter and inlet hose. Trouble is, the outlet of the AFM is 70mm, and the plenum inlet stub is 72mm...

Silicone hose tends to come in either 70 or 76mm. So I guess Im going with 70mm...

Question is, does anyone know if silicone hose is likely to stretch the aditional 2mm or will it not?

Thanks!

Ed.
P.S. Managed to play with the afm alignment to make a planar 90 degree bend, so just one 90 degree silicone elbow needed. Would also benefit from a conical filter for inner wing clearance.

P.P.S, I seem to have a strange emoticon...

Bit of washing-up liquid should do it wink.

Would be interested as I could do with going down this route too.

Yeh the bloody ford hose is NLA, and the only other way of doing it is to use spiral wound ducting - it would probably leak where the sprial wire clamps to the stub...

Drives me nuts the way some manufacturers remove parts from service after 5 minutes. If you want an alternator for a 1970 BMW 3.0 CSL, it takes 3 days to get here from Germany. Trim parts for a 2002tii?? Or even a body shell?!?!?!? Mobile tradition still makes them.

When I did my induction mods i.e. trumpets AFM ect I used this pipe:

When installing mine, the silicon was a bit bigger diameter (don't know the size) and reused the 'adapters' from the original ducting and this made a perfect fit with the apropriate hose clamps. Had some issues to install with the AFM in its normal position due to the rigidness of the hose. Based on that would expect that you will have problems to use the smaller diameter and would personally go for the correct size or larger (+ some sort of adapter).

It will stretch 10% quite easily and a couple of mil on something that size is utterly irrelevent.

Hi Peter, seems that mine most be from a different supplier then. When I remember well it has some kind of fibre as reinforcement and the sturdiness caused issues to be able to have the AFM in its original position (as the plenum and the AFM are not in the same horizontal plane). It doesn't feel very flexible at all as you would expect from silicon hose....

My engine bay is full of silicon hoses in various sizes from 4mm up to about 80mm. Apart from the very small sizes they're all fiber reinforced usually 3- or 4-ply. Despite this they're very stretchy and you should have no problems at all stretching them by a few mil. For cooling systems, if they aren't stretched slightly they're probably too big and may have trouble getting a good seal. For induction systems getting a perfect seal is less important and even if you have to squeeze the hose down a little it will be OK.

I managed to get my standeard AFM Silicone hose to stretch far enough to fit a Jag AFM with no real problems

I replaced my hose with a polished aluminium tube connected at each end by short rubber reducers. It looks quite good and I think the reducers including jubilee clips were about £8 each and the tube £16. I used the aluminium tube because the old tube shrank at the bend quite dramatically, especially when sucking lots of air. I smeared some sealant on just to ensure no air leaks.

I did a similar thing on my 400SE, as well as converting all the cooling system to silicone.

See pic's

Mine is carbon fibre, which connects to CF plenum & CF trumpets.
Can never have to much CF i say. biggrin
