I love eating pistachio nuts but there are so many downsides to them compared with oter types of nut. What p*sses you off most about those little nutty ba$tards?

Sitting down shelling pistachio nuts always makes me feel like I am an extra in "one flew over the cuckoos nest" during a group therapy session retake.

Top nuts though, it has to be said. Our local deli sells them preshelled at not much more £ than the regular ones.

Trusting your mate to shell them and pass you them when you're driving, and the bugger passing you one with the shell still on and crunching it up irked

You missed an option off the list - the worst thing about eating pistachio nuts (in my case) would be dying, as I'm allergic to them! That's only marginally worse than finding an empty shell mind!

Not an issue these days, but before smoking bans, people would fill up ashtrays with the shells. Bloody annoying biggrin

No problem - just have an 'in tray' and an 'out tray' system.

I.e. a nut bag and a smallish receptacle for the shedded shells.

You can buy pistachios with shell removed, Cypressa do them amongst others.

Eat them, and then you will realise why they are better off bought with shells on.

Sometimes too much of a good thing removes the good from the thing.

Having to de-shell a pistachio, one at a time, limits how may you eat and builds up that expectation, which translates into a better taste experience.

Pistachios are only so damned nice because you can never easily get enough in your gob....

The oil in pistachio nuts, when they are stored in bulk, can ferment and heat up to the point where they catch fire!

Don't marine and other insurers take a dim view of them for that very reason?

The worst thing for me was buying a pack of pistachio nuts while I was working in London, I'd rented a flat for the job I was on, but never figured a pistachio would come into the equation. I stupidly tried to crack open a closed pistachio, instead of simply thowing it away. My tooth broke. I was due for a meeting with the then Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown and several people on the project I was Change Managing, and several people from the Bank of England. All were Director types. I had one day to fix my tooth, so I had to fly up to Edinburgh, get my tooth done, then fly back down for the meeting.
I've viewed pistachio nuts with a lot of caution since...
