Apparently a 2 word Google search is the equivalent of boiling a kettle in terms of using energy!!! Well fk me my fingers must be pretty damm quick.

I think the problem is that Google are secretive about the amount of energy their data centres use (the number and location of which they're also secretive about) and so it's easy to just have nested assumptions and come up with a figure below, above or exactly spot-on the truth. And people are stupid so "a cup of coffee", "a boiled kettle" or a "a bath" are easier to 'understand'.

They use large quantities (c450,000) of commodity machines in their data centres so I doubt their electricity bill is small but if you divide that by the number of serviced requests I imagine the energy consumption per search is very low indeed. They will get many thousands of hits per minute.

What a f*cking awful article - total sloppy journalism. Makes me so angry I can't even be bothered to fisk it, beyond saying that Google services over 2 Billion searches every day, so they're at least a factor of ten out.
