is my 5.1 system setup wrong?

morning all.
Right, on monday my new sofa is due to arrive so i no longer have to live on a bean bag. Below is a image of the room and where i currently have the 5.1 speakers.
Is it completley wrong and not giving the right effect? purple / blue dots are speakers
What spacing should i have the fronts apart and do the rears have to point at the sofa?
Please excuse the crudity of this model, I didn't have time to build it to scale or to paint it.
Edit - for you geeks the tv is a Panasonic 50px80e and the system is panasonic pt460

I'm assuming you're other half has influenced your arrangements.
You have to let your hi-fi/AV system dominate the room, then add the furnishings. That means a screen against one wall with front speakers equally distanced on each side of the screen. From the middle of the screen move backwards against opposite wall until you're comfortable, then put a chair there. Put rear speakers at equal distance on either side (pointing at your ears). Subwoofer produces pressure, not sound, so positioning largely irrelevant. Some people swear by a sub per speaker, but I'm not convinced.
Add other furniture and don't let anyone touch anything.
Enjoy, then upgrade.

I can set the delay on the speakers, will that help compensate for the retardedness of my room layout..?
Oh, and as for upgrading. im new to this fancy sound stuff, im going to be flammed here but is there really much difference in a 200 quid system like mine and a 2k system? Especially in a flat surrounded by easily annoyed germans who dont even like washing maching running on a sunday?

I just have to plug a mic into my amp and move it around the room a few times and a little pixie in it works out all the gubbins for me On yours it looks like your going to be sitting at a angle to the front and rears ? just a bit of tweaking should help

A 2k system is cheap as piss. Get serious man, if you've haven't re-mortgaged your house to upgrade your pre-amp you're not a serious 'buff'. in no particular order:
yes, 200 quif - 2 k will be enormous, but then 200 quid - 700 quid would still ebe a massive leap. Qithout getting all "beard" on you, you'd get more detail, voices sounding more natural etc, and the biggest change would be the bass side, which would be punchy and right, rather than simply loud. Wether or not it's worth it though, is totally up to you!
Re. placement, whilst it's not ideal as you have things set, it's arguably as good as you'll get with a corner sofa and the TV where it is. Since it's your living room, I'd be inclined to just set the speaker distances best you can, and try not to set the rears too loud - of the one right by your ear will dominate the surround effect, and detract overall. I suspect that if it's an entry level system, surround left and surround right won't have independant settings - so putting the speakers on either side of the L might be bettetr than the 1 in the corner, so check that before you wire under the carpet.

Ooh, thats good then - unusual at lower price points to have such good adjustment. If it has this, then it'll probably have per speaker volume as well, so do yourself a favour, and get a copy of monsters inc. star wars, or one of the other disks with the THX optimiser on, and run through the volume bit on that - it'll let you get the best out of the system vlume wise.
