I have looked at the useful links page, and it offers some parts for the sealing ring etc, but only a TVR part number for the sender itself. Does anyone know what the orininal sender was from, or an alternative replacement?

ThankS

I'm not sure if the sender is a special but they aren't that expensive from TVR Car Parts; I replaced mine last year and it cost about £34 plus VAT and carriage - but if you are in the TVRCC you get a discount from that.

There was some talk about this a while ago.
I think that the conclusion was that it was made especially for TVR ~ it has TVR stamped on it.

I'm after the seal for the sender, the tank has petrol seeping out round the unit. Not a lot but it's going to need doing.

I didnt realise that TVR car parts give a discount to TVRCC members. Is it a fixed percentage? I didnt think to ask them when I have bought parts from them.banghead

Cheers for that.

Why oh why couldn't the TVR specialist that services mine tell me that? irked

With a bit of luck I'll have a working petrol gauge again soon.

PS Any connectors or earthing points to check before I go ahead and how far do you have to drain the tank to do the swap?

Chris if you remove the filler pipe in the boot (believe me its not easy) you can see the sender in the tank - so if you don't want to fully drain the tank you can see how far the level is with respect to the sender.
Just don't make any sparks etc, best to disconnect the battery.

I did mine with the tank on about 1/3 full and that was ok. I also jacked the car up on that side only though, so that the fuel would tend to sit towards the other side of the tank.

Cheers gents - is it just a case of a couple of screws once you have the tank suitably low etc?

Was worried about draining the fuel as well. Sounds like a straight forward job. Got a fire extinguisher in the garage as well wink

No there are no screws (with the arrangement being described above although IIRC the earlier cars have a different screwed arrangement) it is a ring that you have to knock round to relieve pressure of the rubber seal and then when replacing do the same in reverse to "squeeze" the seal. It is a real bcensoredd to do as you don't know its tight until you refill the tank (3 times on my first occassion).

Top tips:

Use a NEW seal of 3.5-4 mm (IIRC) thickness (or 2x2mm) - the LR ones are thicker (about 3.5mm) than those from TVRCarparts (about 2mm).

Use a sealing paste - I used Hermatite Red which resists petrol and really helps.

I couldn't fit 2x TVRCarparts seals in so used one + an adapted nylon sink plug sealing washer (on the outside and not in contact with the petrol) as a spacer to assist in compression (I had not got the thicker LR seal at that time which arrived later and will be fitted if I have to take it apart again).

Mine is now tight some 7 months on

Hmm, maybe get the sensor and seal and then hand it over to a garage. scratchchin

I've had the sender out of my car 2/3 times to replace/adjust it (ie bend the wire bit) and have had no problem. The locking ring needs to be carefully tapped round using something that won't cut it ( a blunt screwdriver did it for me) and a light hammer. I tightened it up fairly well and then went round all the facets and gave them a gentle final tap; the key thing is to ensure the keep ring is engaged all round before you tighten it. I didn't use any sealant and only one sealing ring so maybe I've been lucky??

Jim,

I think the main reason I had my problems was the first time I was re-using the old seal and it had gone hard and the second time was that I was using the TVR Car Part seal which is too thin with one and too thick with two. When I used one new seal, the sink washer and Hermatite red it sealed first time.

Concur your "make sure it's enagaged all round" and tap with a blunt screwdriver (cover the end with insulating tape to avoid sparks)

There are originally 3 types of fuel sender. This is the "official" factory drawing showing all three.

Only one is still available via TVR Car Parts which I believe is the bottom one, and I also believe they are not interchangeable.

Just had a look at the sender/tank. The tank is definitely wet with fuel below the sender but seems worse along the bottom seam. I'm hoping this is just collecting after seeping out of the sender unit. The thing is covered in oil and muck and wet with petrol. Looks like only a 2mm seal at the moment.

Is there any way to identify them from the outside (ie when they're still fitted)? I don't want to disasemble it in order to find which one I need.

Actually, in my case I suspect it's a wiring fault - it went from working intermittently, to not at all - but I was going to take it to the TVR Centre to sort out the wiring and grab a spare sender in case that was needed.

I've re-inserted the image, this is the external view.
