Well, its that time of year soon, and I know all cars have their quirks (surely not a TVR!), so, what are the main things they fail on....

Hard to say, took mine in for its ticket on Sat, only to be told they could not do the MOT as they could not get it on the ramps. Their excuse for not knowing this when it was booked.... The Tamora is an off road 4x4!!

Its now going to Castle TVR to get it done, I would guess if you use a TVR garage they can compensate (within the law) for TVR's oddities.

Hi Peter smile. I don't think I'd try and put a list together on possible MOT fail points tbh, but can recommend some MOT centres if you are wondering where to take it.

I would have thought your Chimaera would have sailed through!

Hi Nicky,
I expect it to, and will be taking it to Matt at Sebring. I was just interested in other peoples experiences.

Lovely run out yesterday BTW.

Hi Peter,

My Chim flew through in November, although I have been doing plenty of work to brakes, suspension and steering lately. The only advisory was the handbrake is borderline and I think that is a common thing.

Agree on the ramps point, and the rolling brake test - usually a drop to get into and out of the rollers. It is worth explaining that the TiV is low. I have had to try several centres (not worth the trip to SP just for MoT)

You arent supposed to use the rollers on a Tiv as it has an LSD and (well according to posts on here) you can damage it. They should have a G meter instead (cant recall whats is technical name is) , you drive the casr a few yards, stamp the brakes and it gives a reading.

Tapley meter is the kiddie for doing the brakes instead of the rollers, jut watch they don't pull the line 'just taking it for a spin round the block to do the break test'. IIRC from the Tapley web site its done at about 20mph then a second time at a lower speed but I might be wrong.

For what it's worth I think it's definitely better to go via a dealer/specialist/indie as they will use the same MOT centre all the time and that centre will be used to TVR's and their quirks and how to work around them.

One common issue is the hand brake because they are mostly ccensoredp (but since we all know that we tend to leave them in gear with the wheels turned in as well).
In a none TVR savvy place things like the rear lit number plate can also cause issues along with exhaust noise level - Is it really supposed to be this loud ?
Even simple stuff like how to open the door so they can switch the lights on can be a problem if they don't know Tiv's.

Agree with the handbrake being bobbins, as I almost found out to my cost tonight...... Parked on drive didn't put in gear. Got out locked up went to rummage in the boot of my jag parked lower down the driveway in the second car space..... Turned round just at the right time to find the TVR rolling towards me yikes had to shout the misus to come out to back it up before I got squashed. NOTE to self..... leave in gear and curb wheels

I've had the handbrake re-furbed and it works perfectly, but I always leave it handbrake off and bricks behind the wheels to save stretching the cable, and mech seizing on. Yes....it was rubbish before.smile
