....does anyone know more about them. Technical specs and explosive quantity?

They look like oversized fireworks to me and although deadly, are they really so powerful? I would imagine the bulk of the rocket to be the fuel leaving very little room for any explosives....

From my side of the fence, it looks like David vs. Goliath.....

I think you're dead right. They're actually pretty hopeless things which have caused very few casualties indeed. However i would imagine it is a right pain in the arse living in the area under fire from them, 'cos i imagine they really interfere with everyday life, with people having to sleep in shelters etc.

Most of the Hamas rockets targeted at Israel are rudimentary, cobbled together in small metal shops in densely populated Gaza.

But a growing number are more sophisticated, longer-range weapons, believed to be made from parts thought to originate in Syria or Iran and smuggled in through tunnels from Egypt.

Despite that new capacity, Hamas' missile arsenal is still much smaller than that of another anti-Israeli militant group, Hezbollah.

The Lebanese group, also supported by Syria and Iran, is not fettered by a tight border blockade and finds it easier to obtain arms.

Hamas' homemade rocket, known informally as the Qassam, is grossly imprecise, carries a small warhead of about 9.9kg of explosives. They have caused casualties, but more often just spark panic.

The imported missiles, Katyushas, are better guided, travel farther and cause more damage because they have a warhead of up to 19.9kg - roughly the weight of a cannon shell from one of Israel's Merkava tanks.

Little more than a powerfull hand grenade. Maybe a 1lb of actual explosive charge, virtually completely unguideable. Most of them land in waste ground or farm land. Sadly, occasionally one will find a target (probably one in 50?)

Israel on the other had responds with 500lb bombs, mortars, rockets, airburst munitions, gunships, tanks and artillary.

Whilst I support any countrys right to defend itself, and to prosecute retribution on its attackers, I'd suggest it should remain proportionate and with the laws of conflict, human rights and plain human Decency.

you only have to look at the pictures of the craters that they leave - tiny and pathetic.

They only get fired to make the point that Gaza hasnt totaly collapsed under the blockades. A sort of 'we arent dead yet' message.

If it remained proportionate it would go on for ever. Someone shoots a gun, next person shoots a gun. It isn't a game of tennis. It's war.

I'm surprised its such a large payload having seen the poor results at the other end. Is this weapons grade explosives or something cobbled together from comercially available ingredients? Certainly the effects seem little more effective than a small mortar round or grenade type explosion.

The only recent fatalaity that I've heard reported 'on the other end' of one of these attacks was a Palestinian builder....

Someone shoots a glorified firework into a field, you'd respond by droping thousands of pounds of ordanance on a UN flagged school or refugee camp....?

Interesting perspective on the interpretation of global laws.

I totally agree with Tony. I ask this question, because I have several Israeli and Jewish friends and my facebook is totally awash with anti-Palestinian / Hamas video propaganda and it's totally doing my head with how naive, obtuse and stupid, people can be.

I'm just doing a lot of reading, research and trying to gather some facts......

The best backlash I've heard is from a Jewish friend of mine who is surprisingly balanced on his opinions and even has a lot of sympathy for Palestine is with a t-shirt he's wearing around the office with the slogan: "Humus, not Hamas"

I totally agree, and it wouldn't go on for ever either. Smart people would sort it out. Israels totally disproportionate action will see the conflict going on for a far greater time. The current fiasco could add decades to the trouble, and certainly result in the death of far more Israelis than any of those rockets was going to do.

It looks like a collapsed shed made of twigs and left-over scaffold.

Let's put it in comparison:

So you would prefer it was tit for tat? There would be no end.

This isn't just a glorified firework either. There are plenty of people dying on both sides, so it shows it is more than just fireworks being sent in the air.

Hi Tony - agreed but the Israelis are trying to take out the launch sites and missile factories wherever they're hidden.

So how many of you would be happy to let them be fired at your family?

Anyway it doesnt matter how small they are (10 kilos is still plenty), over 3,000 of them were indiscriminately fired at Isreal in 2008, each one able to kill someone, whether they do or not doesn't really matter, the intent to kill is there. Mortar rounds were also fired into Isreal.

When the homemade rockets fall short they don't decide not to kill anone, a 13 month year old girl was kill in Gaza by a rocket fired by Hamas.

As I said, I dont deny Israels right to defend itself or prosecute offensive actions against its enemies. However, I would despute your comment about "plenty of people" on both sides dying.

Jerusalem Post writer Larry Derfner said:
“The [Palestinian] Kassam [rockets] have terrorized the 25,000 people in Sderot and its environs, but have caused very, very few deaths or serious wounds. By contrast, Israel has terrorized 1.5 million Gazans, locked them inside their awfully narrow borders, throttled their economy, and killed and seriously wounded thousands of them…

“This is crazy. Israel is the superpower of the Middle East, but because we still think we’re the Jews of Europe in the 1930s, or the Israelites under Pharaoh, we spend a lot more time fighting our enemies than we might if we looked at the whole picture, not just our half of it . . .”

As Gazan hospitals and morgues fill beyond capacity because of an ongoing air assault that cruelly began at precisely the hour when countless children were heading home from school, we’re expected to believe that small craters mostly in empty Israeli fields constitute this terrible episode’s chief sin.

Bugs bothered by sporadically impacting, glorified fireworks cobbled together in backyard garages are ludicrously supposed to be the primary problem, not human limbs and lives escalatingly shattered by the most destructive weapons that military science can produce!

At any point during the past six decades, Israel could have had peace, simply by assenting to the great moral imperative of our time, namely the Palestinians’ right to their own, unitary, sovereign homeland.

Something that Israel continues to resist both tooth and nail, F16 and Apache helicopter gunship.

Two years ago, in Southern Lebanon, Israel engaged in similar bombings in civilian areas. Then, too, it maintained that only “terrorist” targets were being hit. As impartial observers finally ascertained the truth, clear evidence of enormous civilian carnage surfaced.

The Israeli leadership lied then, and it’s lying now.
If the UK had bombed Republican areas of Northern Ireland every time a 20,000lb lorry bomb had gone off in London we'd have seen global uproar.
