I need a small safe/strong box that would ideally allow the following:

Someone with an electronic PIN number to be able to walk right up to it and open it.
Someone with a key to be able to walk right up to it and open it.
Either of the above to work independently.

Essentially we want to store some paperwork so that Joe Bloggs can't get at it, those who need to get at it regularly can do so easily without needing a key (let's assume their access doesn't need to be logged/audited), but if someone else needs to get in there, there is an auditable means to do so such as signing out a key.

Looks like there's loads of cheap safes around, just not sure how independent the operating mechanisms are?

Can you not lock something else inside it with a Key thus not having the dual system on the outside idea

Is there such a thing as a safe you don't have to 'walk right up to' to open? confused

So you have the PIN on the Safe but within the Safe you have a LOCKED BOX.

Day to day the Safe is PIN operated but the Extra Special Weekend Key required objects are Locked by Key in a Lock Box INSIDE the safe.

Not quite what you meant but perhaps a option if the situation is workable.

The electronic combination safe's which I've seen tend to have a key over ride, presumably in case the code is fogotten. This would seem to work in the way you want.
