Re training for a decent salary

I am now 26 and having done a film degree at University I have decided that the film industry is not for me. Now as the missus and I ar now thinking about kids, marriage etc I want to retrain. The new career must be able to provide a decent salary at the end i.e £30-40k pa.

What would Pistonheaders recommend as a worthwhile career/industry to retrain in?

You could do feet?

Podiatry degree. Funded by the NHS so minimal outlay, relatively.

Would take about 4 years (from today) from starting the course to staring your first job.

So what's wrong with the film industry? Lots of money to be made, big budgets, ideal for your purposes I would have thought.

But, you have to be good at either

a) Making films

or

b) doing something useful to do with making films

What about accountancy? meant to be fairly stable i hear? How do you go about becoming an accountant? iirc its a long process.

Are there any elements to your first degree that would be transferrable, ie that you could gain access to a professional post grad or MA level - as opposed to a second degree?

It's a good idea to build on what you've got if possible rather than start from scratch again.

Be a courier. I think there's a market for a home courier that delivers between 5 and 8.30pm, and on quiet days you could sub out to Tesco

It's a good idea to build on what you've got if possible rather than start from scratch again.

Like accountant/caterer/agent/supplier in the film industry, as you know a bit about the sector.

To say that business is saturated is an understatement.

You will never beat the bigger people.

Its a bit dead at the moment.

Best thing to do is carry on with the film industry, but set up something else to run along side it. Something that would be useful to the film industry ideally (Transport/catering etc). Then once the company's established you can get yourself into the film business where the big money is. Producers try to use company's they know, or know the owners of.

If you do make it big as a producer, I know a very good SFX wire-man.

I would say a trade, Heating Engineer/Plumber.
