e39 M5 or MONARO

Both good cars. If your buying a base model 5.7 and not something like a VXR model then Id say a decent M5 would be the better bet even though it will cost alot more to service and maintain.
I think that's a bit unfar to the CV8 (5.7). They're cheaper to buy, which means there's more money to spend on the important stuff like decent brakes and go faster goodies. No silly, plastic spoilers either and most of the HSV bolt on stuff is tat compared to the after market alternatives.

I have had both cars and would say the M5 is a quite different car with lots of gadgets and driver aids. To drive they are very different. Its personal choice, but when you compare the new costs of both you can see that a car costing £70k is built quite differently from a car costing half that. Drive both and enjoy but... watch out for the repair costs on BMW's I had an engine go and the total bill was over £14k (you could buy a Mon for that). Main dealer servicing costs will kill off the fun of owning a BMW, where as a well set up Monaro (Monkfish etc) will do more to the gallon, but I would doubt it would get round a track faster with a really good driver in both (interesting challenge to all the faster Monaro owners).
I would buy (and did and still own) the best VXR you can afford unless you want boot space and 4 doors and then it’s a VXR8.
Enjoy what ever you choose- drive like you stole it!

Nothing wrong with the 5.7 VXR which has the larger boot and HSV heritage. Thats the best monaro IMO.
Smaller boot ones have been ruined IMO. VXR8 is closer to M5 in spec. 4 Doors etc. Plus massive boot.
Wider tyres, better brakes from scratch. Newer/better ECU, etc.
Anyway BMW's are too common and boring.

I looked at buying an m5 they are a very nice drive plus you get all the toys but boring to look at the only people that will know what you have brought will be other petrolhaeds. where as everybody looks at a monaro. plus at around 10k for a good 2000 model for a good m5 but i payed under 13k for my o6 plate vxr with 40k on the clock it just dont get better than that

You could say we are all biased here. but hey you did ask the HSV / Monaro forum. i would have to say i would have a monaro or an RX8 any day over a BMW. not a big fan really. there well engineered cars just not for me. bit to common as everyone wants one or has one where a monaro makes people take notice. even BMW drivers give you the nod.
well there is my 2 pence worth.

I have (or perhaps HAD) always loved and coveted an M5. However, a mate bought an E39 shortly before I got the Monaro, and whilst the BM is massively capable, etc etc etc, it just feels lacking in any sort of soul whatsoever to me. Same with another car, another mate had a 330 Ci Clubsport and on the few occasions I drove it, it felt like "just a car" if that makes sense.
If you're thinking M5 then yes, the VXR8 might be worth a look, but the Monaro has somewhat more je ne sais quoi (IMO!).
