Paupers Funeral

Going to one next Wednesday.
Bloke from the pub died about three months ago.
His paupers funeral (his only living sone wants nothing to do with it) is next week and a few (three) of us are going to pay our respects and not let him be put to rest alone. (I would hate that)
We have been told to turn up at the grave yard at 12 and it will be for about 15 mins.
Anybody been to one?
what shall i expect?

Try a little Vick on your upper lip and on each nostril , apparently it stops you feeling too nauseous from the smell. Three months is a long time Bloke from the pub died about three months ago.

That is so sad. I didn't realise they still had paupers funerals. How utterly utterly sad. How can people be so cruel. Well done you for attending.It will be very basic - a "mate" of mine died and he had no family (he was abandoned as a child after sever beatings by his parents and had lifelong injuries from it, been inside for various stuff but would always come to your rescue if you got in trouble up town).
About 10 of us, clubbed together and got flowers and a plaque made up. Rest was paid for by the state as he had no other family.
The vicar had no history to go on apart from what we told him - and we only knew him for 3 years before he died - so it was a standard service.
All over and done with inside 20 mins.
Very sad. Good on you for going...make sure you have a
for him after.

About 10 of us, clubbed together and got flowers and a plaque made up. Rest was paid for by the state as he had no other family.

You never rearly know about a person untill it's too late. I have been to a few funerals in the past, people I thought I knew well, only to discover some revelation that made me think I never knew them at all. Seems his 'talked' about family who he saw weekly was all made up as he didn't want us to know he had nobody.

He was a great character. Always joking with a beer belly to be proud of.
I'm going to say a few words while we are there as he should be talked about as a 'person' at his funeral, not a plot..

Seriously not much different to any other you might have been to. Been to two at Carlisle Crem, both disabled folks lived at home alone. There should still be the regular undertaker, regular veneered chipboard coffin, no flowere unless you provide them to the undertaker beforehand, and the regular duty Minister.
They're nothing like the old shameful Pauper Funerals, there'll be a piece said by the Minister and the usual funeral service applies. Then you all go and get pissed.

If he died other than on a hospital campus, the local authority have a duty to make arrangements in the absence of anyone else doing so. These will be the bare minimum that is necessary for decency. I once got a b

The LA also get to sort any possessions/property and any value, after settling burial expenses, goes to the Treasury Solicitor (ie Govt). Prolly the grimmest thing I've ever had to do...

Good for you. No family is sad but no one at all is horrible. Just a few mates down the pub is enough for many people, a few words can go a long way.I believe it will be a bare minimum cremation, paid by the local council. At least it will be done in his local crematorium or parish. I don't think there is any service, perhaps other than a graveside one?
What I find really creepy is Hart Island in New York - thats where all the crack babies and homeless end up, along with the prison scum - its a "Potters Field" - and is actually out of bounds and part of the prison service.

He died in a half way house across the road from the pub. Nobody knew he lived there.
