After having problems with my last Panasonic set I was offered a new Panasonic 32" D81 with the freesat inbuilt as an exchange. It's really great and the picture is way better than last one but I am wondering about the freesat and hd.
I have looked at loads of sites and understand to receive the freesat channels I will need a dish. However, I didn't really get an answer about the programmes on normal TV that says 'available in hd' for instance football games or a film on ITV last night.
I do not have any other hd sources like sky+ or Xbox. The manual doesn't really state whether I can 'switch' a setting on to see these terrestrial channels in hd, any ideas?

I've got freesat via a Humax Foxsat PVR, got it all just befor Christmas. I watch it via a 37 Panasonic LCD (can't remember the model, but it's a 100HZ jobby and has 1080i HDMI capabilities)
I wasn't mad keen on getting HD, but I got a bonus from work and had to buy something with it, so I blew it on HD. Watching BBC or ITV in HD *is* good, but I'm not sure I'd recommend the outlay yet, the prices will come down.
As for content the BBC has a dedicated HD channel and you can watch programmes all night on this, so far it's limited but there's a bit (e.g 3 men in a boat, Shrek, Gavin and Stacey etc.) ITV is more limited but I watched Liverpool vs Preston a couple of weeks ago and it was very very good.
I've still got terrestial hooked up to the telly through an aerial so that I can watch normal telly, I just flick between the two via switching AV channels. (Dave isn't on Freesat, Men and Motors isn't on terrestrial)

The TV will have two tuners. The first will be a terrestial tuner. This will ONLY recieve 625 line programs. The second is the Freesat Tuner this will recieve programs in 625 Standard Definition and also High Definition. These are via the Satellite dish ONLY. The HD channels are usually on a different number on the Freesat menu as only a limited number of programs have been produced in HD.

That answers what I thought was the case anyway but now at least won't be thumbing through the manual anymore! I was looking at dishes and unless I am mistaken they are a lot cheaper than I thought, it looks I can get what I need for around £40. To be able to watch the freesat stations this *appears* to be very reasonable.

You are correct. A red button symbol comes up on the screen when watching ITV if the programme is available in HD. BBC HD is a separate channel.cjs said:

So you will need an aerial and a dish if you want all these.
If you think you will want to use a Freesat pvr in the future then remember to order a twin or quad LNB for the dish and run 2 cables from the LNB.

My Dads Panny with built in Freesat accepts HD.Each of the boxes offered by Humax, Grundig et al have a standard definition version and a high definition version.
