A good weekend in the UK??

Hi all, I'm hoping to take advantage of the current exchange rate (I'm from Ireland) and head to the UK for a weekend away.

We (Girlfriend and myself) are hoping to do this in late January/Early February. I'm looking for recommendations but please bear in mind the following.

- Not really looking for a city break, plan is to fly in, hire a car, spend a couple of days touring and fly home again.

- Would like recommendations on places to stay, must be cheap, but nice.

- Not really been to the UK much (Edinburgh a few times but thats about it)

- Would love some long scenic drives with some interesting stops along the way (wouldn't object if they're motoring related )

So I open it up to the PH floor, where would you recommend??

How about the lake district? Wrynose pass, Ullswater, etc. Its not very busy this time of year and there are plenty of cheap accomodation and good pubs.

Too add, Holker Hall has a very good motoring museum.

Lake District or Yorkshire Dales or Peak District - fly into Manchester, drive up the M6 and explore. Lots of nice hotels.

South Wales, pretty sure you can still get a cheap flight to Cardiff. Plenty to do in and around Cardiff and some lurvely roads in the Brecon Beacons for a drive.

Not a great lover of the west coast, I think I'd be looking at Whitby or similar, loads of great roads & countryside with little traffic. Or even further up say west of Leeds.

Absolutely. I lived in Leeds for a few years, so was only half an hour away from the Yorkshire dales.
Or if you're going near Ladybower resevoir (Peak district?) I can heartily recommend the Yorkshire bridge inn. I think they do accommodation too.

You could fly direct Dublin - Bournemouth and do some Dorset coast, New Forest (including Beaulieu Motor Museum) or head down to Devon direction. Lots to stop and see but the roads themselves aren't that amazing!

Use your car, catch ferry to Holyhead from Dublin/Dun Laoghaire then drive down through Wales (Snowdonia etc) then return ferry to Rosslare from Pembroke/Fishguard.

Hire a car.

Head north up to Skye.

Stay at the Flodigarry Hotel.



Relax and eat and stroll about a bit.

Take stunning photos.

Go home and bore the teats off your friends and family about it for the next 12 months.

Ferry goes from Dublin (don't know how often this time of year) Awesome roads and more motoring history than you can shake a thingy at.
