Probably better off asking on the General Motorsport/GT Racing forum - what with only LMP1/2 and GT1/2 cars racing at Le Mans.

For GT3s you're looking at FIA GTs.

Unlikely as it's a GT3 car and the only GT classes that are raced at Le Mans are GT1 and GT2.

If someone has built an R8 to GT1 or more likely GT2 specification then it may be able to race but it's too early to say if one is/isn't as the closing date for 2009 entry forms was only 3 days ago (12th Jan.) so no lists of entries will be available for some time.

The only list available at the moment is the list of automatic invitees, teams that for one reason or another (e.g. winning Le Mans last year, winning the American Le Mans Series, etc) automatically get a place in the race - if they want it.

For the GT2 class these are:
Risi - Ferrari F430
BSM - F430
Flying Lizard - Porsche 997
Virgo - F430
Felbermayr - 997
AF Corse - F430

While one of these teams could enter a GT2 spec. R8 it's highly unlikely they would jump to a completely unknown, untried and untested platform for the 24hrs.

Am I being stupid, as "I GO EVERY YEAR BUT DIDNT REALISE THERE WAS A RACE ETC" but the 911s are GT3 production cars, not GT2 cars, so if as you say they race in GT2 class, cant the R8 if they enter it as GT2 spec, apparently they announced on sat there would be a car at Le Mans, as their top drivers are in it??????!!!!!

Think you may be right, cant find much mention of it, but a friend in the know (or NOT) is convinced its running.....I will have him arrested and shot for mis information.

The Porsche name is confused by a mix of history and marketing, with road-car models sharing names with non-road legal race cars.

If Wikipedia is be be believed a 997 GT3RS is a striped out, road legal car. The 997 GT3RSR on the other hand is a out and out, custom built race car that shares the same profile as a GT3RS but that's about it.

The GT3 race car got it's name from being designed to FIAGT3 regulations but can be modified to meet FIA and LM GT2 regulations.

Now a Audi R8 GT3 could almost certainly get the same workover from GT3 to GT2 spec. but who's going to do it? Audi - wouldn't have thought so as they have their two R10s racing for the over-all win.

And who would drive it? You say their top drivers are meant to be in it, well that would be McNish, Kristensen, etc who are top LMP1 drivers used to winning Le Mans/ALMS/LMS outright. Would they really rather take the cash and drive around at the back in GT2 cars, or switch to another LMP1 team where they are at least able to fight for the bottom step on the podium?

Audi could look to some of their other DTM drivers - Ekstrom, Tomczyk, Kath. Legg, etc of course who would probably be more than happy to get any drive a Le Mans.
