Hi folks

Hope you can help!

What value would you place on a 308 gtb registered as total loss on the insurance database 10 years ago?

Has been repaired now but still recorded.

HELP!!

My opinion is as long as you have some one take a look at it with a PPI. You already know it had a crash anyway. You should get it at a very very good price. Have you a link to the car? Please keep us informed on how much you may buy it for.
At the right price as long as its been repaired and checked independently. I would buy one my self to add to my stable.

My first performance car was a Cat D. I had it inspected by Autolign before I bought it and with a clean bill of health this enabled the recorded stats to say that it was inspected and passed.

The rule of thumb used to be 20% less than normal market value. In this current climate, may be worth assuming 30%?

I heard somewhere that the value should be 66% of a straight car! If so where does a calculation like that come from?

That equates to 34% less, which, like I said, in this climate when there are loads of undamaged examples around, might be about the mark.

Five years ago the accepted industry rule of thumb was around the 20% less mark. The figures presumably came from how much such cars achieved at sale.

Thanks for you replies. I'm not sure about the car now as the seller wasn't aware of the it being on the insurance list.

Cat D might have only been stolen/recovered, still worth a look and a trawl back through the history. A few quid at a specialist would soon tell you if it was any good, and an Autolign inspection could get the Cat D removed I believe.

From my insurance experience, Cat D's can often be the result of a financial write off rather than necessarily a more serious structural write off or assessment of unroadworthiness due to uneconomic costs to rebuild including panelling and expensive parts replacement etc.

As one poster states, an inspected and approved car can be removed from the HPI list as far as I understand and to be fair to the vender, he may not have been aware of the cars status if he had not HPI'd the car on purchase.

Certainly worth looking into further and 30% decrease in value would be correct for the current climate.

Good luck
