Help Needed Half life 2 Servers - How to set up.
Discussion
Hi Guys,
We have started playing Half Life 2 and wondered if we could set up our own server.
The Problem is that we have no idea which way to turn or what to do !
Would anyone on PH be able to advise as to what is needed to set up a HL2 Gaming Server and what costs are involved ?
There are 8 of us who play at the moment.
Thanks in advance for the info.

If you're wanting to pay to host, I'd just stick 'Half Life 2 server hosting' in Google and have a flick through the links.
There will be plenty of companies that provide the service all over the world

Its the information which is Alien to us !
We are lost as to how to set up etc...!
take a look here for starters.
There is a lot of info to take in with regard to server settings (tickrate, rcon etc) but for messing about online with friends, just a standard server with standard settings will be fine.
You will need to master the rcon commands and this link is for the Medal of Honor mod but the instructions for setting up an RCON.cfg file etc are shared as its an Half Life based game mod.

As long as the server is hosted near to where most of you live (easy if you're all UK based!) so it isn't too laggy for everyone, just sort out how to use RCON (it's not that hard
) and away you go.jcwuk said:

Inx-gaming do great, lag free servers for not very much at all - maybe around 16 pounds for 16 players. Their support was always very good too.
is that £16 per month ? or how does it work ?I'd recommend a minimum of 12 players slots, open to the public with a standard map rotation. This means that up to 12 players can join the server and it will be "public", meaning that any tom, dick or harry can join. If you want to join ther server and you find its full of random people, you can remotely kick people off to make space for yourself and your friends.
Choose a map rotation of popular maps and it will change map every 30 minutes or so. With RCON, you can change map whenever you feel like it

Can you recommend a company to sign up with?
I host many a game server, from Half-life2 Deathmatch to Call of dutys etc.
The HL2 dedicated server file are free via a download from steam, its the fast internet connection, location etc that cost the money.
I can offer Half-Life2 servers at £1 per slot, so a 12man gaming server will cost £12 per month. My servers are located in Bluesquare House, Maidenhead. All game servers come with a control panel to manage/stop/start the server at any time.
If you are interested, or simply want to find out more feel free to email me at rob@liveon3internet.com ill be happy to help.

Thanks to Rob for an Excellent level of service and making sense of the whole server thing for us !
In conjunction with HLSW, for admin tasks, you will find if you install metamod and sourcemod, your life will be made about 1000 times easier, as all the admin commands will be in pop up menu systems, rather than ferreting about through help files and google.Server Address is at Half Life 2

It's not as scary as it sounds, just download them from the requisite websites, alter the config files to contain your steam IDs (to lock admin to you) and upload them to the directories on the game server the install FAQs tell you to; Reboot the server - job's a good'un.
Once you have that you can start experimenting with plugins - there's all sorts of stuff you can do. Look at https://forums.alliedmods.net/ for more info.
Extra maps can be got from FPSBanana.
Hope this helps!
