I`m thinking of buying a set of decats for the Cerb. After reading a few posts on here, no-one has come up with a straight answer on which ones to buy.Linked or seperate? I know it`ll be personal preference on the noise level, I`m not interested in increasing the noise (too much ;-)) and I don`t do track days. Can anyone give any advice on what and where to buy a set? Or does anyone have any used decats for sale, in case I don`t like them and decide to put the cats back on.
I currently have seperate s/steel sports pipes to the rear and wouldn`t mind a few flames spitting out the back on over run!

Straight decats are the cheaper option but are also more noisy.

Linked decats offer less noise (although more than cats), better balanced gas flow and a slight bhp gain.

Thanks Jules,

Looks like linked de-cats will be the prefered choice as the Cerb seems loud enough now. I take it these will just let the engine `breathe` better. Do you know if the Trackcar cooling remap works well with these? As that chip mod is already fitted.

You are absolutely right about the engine breathing slightly better, hence the small hp increase without any mapping. The cooling remap / linked decats will be fine also.

The linked decats and trackcar cooling mod work fine together - at least on mine they do.

Just FYI noise levels @ 4k rpm were;
Sports exhaust + linked decats 127 dB(A)
Standard back box + linked decats 110 dB(A)

scratchchin I think 127db is pretty darned loud! The MGC was 111db at Snetterton recently and was pretty unbearable for a road car

I was going to go with non-linked decats, but I suspect that would be a bit too loud given I have the sports exhaust.

Also, am I being daft here in assuming you need a cooling chip when you have a decat? are they related somehow?

Cooling chip is a good idea anyway as it reduces the under bonnet temperature, but if you dont have cooling issues now then decatting wont cause any issues.

Ok, cheers. Couldn't see the relationship. Don't have too many worries, don't go in traffic for starters (helps having mile upon mile of B roads to explore on your doorstep biggrin)

My cerb (98 4.2) is de-catted (dont think they are linked - will check) with striaght thro' sections connecting to 3" diameter hand made (cant remember the name of the co.) stainless exhausts (there are what look like silencers at the rear but they are not very big...) and its LOUD!

Dont have any idea what DB level but its anti social to the point where I am thinking about making it quiter... I quite like the idea of inter-changable cans on the back, tuscan style...?

Then again, it sounds awesome so b*ll*cks to everyone else!

127 dB is a little unpleasant on a long run - even more so when I had the back seats and carpet stripped while I was refurbising the interior! Some people have fury dice hanging from the mirror - I had earplugs!

The volume was why I went back to a standard back box in order to stand a chance of coming under track day noise limits. I found that I also needed a pair of trackday silencers as well, though linked decat with a standard box is just right for general road use. (I put the sports exhaust back on temporarily for Thunder In The Tunnels... hehe)
