Apexi Boost Controller AVC-R / EVO 6

Hi,
does anyone know how to set this up for EVO 6 or anyone around Oxford area I can get this done from? I have the manual but it warns to go to a professional. I was told it is running 0.6 bar, the car does not seem as fast as it should be
Also the car does not seem to be handling as I thought it would, tyres seem very good, can this be all down to AYC fluid change?
Any Evo 6 owners I can ask loads of questions will be greatly appreciated!

I have only had a quick spin in it, my brothwer just bought it and has no tax yet, but when i drove it it was a bit wet and it did not inspire me with confidence unlike the pulsar I had previously? people say they are superb handling so I think somethings wrong, and I have not driven another evo to compare it to.
evo 6's are VERY edgy... thats part of their 'feel'
they have a feeling of instability almost
like being up on their toes
they often don't inspire confidence until you've learnt them and really lent on them for grip and smoothed out your inputs etc.. Remember the rack is quite quick.
that said, I wouldnt want to convince you that theres not a problem when there could well be
some of it will depend on teh setup, a lot of the evo guys run fast road front toe which makes teh car even edgier

If the AVC-R hasn't been set up according to how it's been mapped then you wont be making the most of it. If it's on a standard map then I'm sure someone on Lancer Register will sort you out, and you'll probably do well to get it mapped and setup at the same time to make the most of what you've got.

Does it need strengthening? I thought standard engines on VI's were good for up to 350bhp before they needed any internal mods? If he's just cranking up the boost a bit then he should only be worried about fuelling and boost cutting.You can do it on the road, but you need to know what you're doing.
Specifically, you can't go over the boost that the engine was previously mapped to, otherwise you risk misfuelling the engine and damaging it.
If you know what it's been mapped to then doing it yourself is relatively safe, but if you get it wrong you risk hitting the boost cut, where the ECU detects a spike and dumps all of the boost.
You basically have to set up the controller so the boost picks up as quickly as possible but then reaches maximum boost without going over the top. In the Apexi you can even set this up for different gears so it's quite complicated.

back in the days it appeared to be common practise not to touch the internals and just merrily raise boost as people's hearts desired. It wasnt until they opened their engines up that they realised that you don't get something for nothing in life !
Before you can say anything about the handling you need to make sure it has had the geometry set up. Evos are very sensitive to it. They are also very sensitive to tyre wear - especially in the wet.
I am in Milton Keynes and if you want to get it over to me I'll chuck it around a few roundabouts and let you know what I think. (Honest offer - not just asking to rag your car).

In my opinion this is the way to proceed.
Get some way of datalogging your car such as the EvoScan OBDII datalogger. Use this to gauge how well your engine is running in terms of knock, injector duty cycle etc. This will give you an idea of whether your fuel system has any extra capacity to cope with the airflow increase you will get by upping the boost.
If all seems OK get the boost controller set up and raise the boost slowly, data log each time to check for knock, timing getting pulled etc... Once you've reached a level where you are starting to knock lower your settings until the knock stops plus some as a safety margin for cold days and the like. Then you can start looking at optmising things such as gain and in gear boost control.
Talk of strengthening the engine, remaps etc. is a bit premature in my opinion unless you are planning on going nuts with the boost. If you are talking of going up to 1 bar then I don't think the engine would need any work as long as you are not getting any knock. Any more than that and you need to start thinking of bigger injectors, fuel pump and fuel controller to get the fuel in. Bigger turbos and/or intercoolers to get cooler air in, timing control, forged internals etc...

True, I wouldn't recommend winding up the boost and taking it to a track every weekend without internal mods, but a tweak for road use is probably fine. I'm probably spoilt with my 9! Most take them up over 400 without even a hint to internal mods. Mine's at a happy and safe 370 with breathing mods and a remapi would say ARP bolts as a minimum

Hi guys, I am new in the Forum. I hope you may help me in a problem i have.
I have two friends with Evo 6 TM edition, both.
The one was imported to Cyprus from England. It has an AVC-R boost controller by Apexi installed.
The bad thing is that the settings have been lost. it was tuned by a company in england and now it is set to default... someguy messed it.
Does anyone use one of these and can somebody help me to set it up?
the one thing we know is that the boost pressure was set to 1,4Kg, and this was set up when the car was in england.

Plenty past and present EVO owners on pistonheads too.
The MLR has a strict post limit if you haven't paid them £30 each year, whereas pistonheads is free of charge.
The handling issues as has been mentioned in this thread maybe down to numerous things.
First is basically get used to the car and learn the limitations....although they are quite impressive on the EVO6 ! (just build up slowly if on public roads and remember the EVO6 can easily oversteer in the wet).
