Hi all,
Inspired by a couple of threads I've read recently I thought I'd start one to ask for advice/opinions
I have just ordered a merkur futur safety razor as I am sick of razor rash and looking like a stubbly george michael reject. Thanks to the razor recommendations thread!
Another thread has me concerned though, I also like to keep the lychees peeled so to speak and was wondering whether anyone uses a safety on the old fella? Obviously it will still be massively cheaper and more comfortable to use safety on face and stick with multi blade badness for the happy sack but I don't really want to have two razors (especially one really embarrassing plastic one!)
Thanks all

not mine I'm afraid, I read it in the nut shaving thread!
I have to claim that one as my own, indeed from the nut shaving thread. The Merkur is a fantastic bit of kit. I gnore the cries of "it reduces your face to ribbons", as the owners are not using it correctly.
I get a much closer shave than I ever did with a Gillette Wilkinson Tubro Mach 3 Extra Vibrating Dongle.
You DO have to 'relearn' the art of shaving though, you can't take bit sweeping strokes with a safety razor like you would with a multiblade, you'll be stripping flesh off quiker than Arnie's arm in Terminator 2.
YouTube 'safety razor', there are a couple of decent tutorials about how to shave and different techniques to use with one.
Its also worthwhile investing in some decent shave oil, and also shave creme and brush. This definately helps your technique with a safety razor.
If you get a Futur, don't ever use it on a higher setting than 4 though, it's bordering on suicidal!
ETA: There's no way the Futur would EVER go anywhere near my lychees, too risky! I keep a Gillette Fusion for that purpose. The skin on your sack is much softer and thinner than on your face. If you have to be careful using a safety on your face, think how careful you'd need to be down there! Not worth the risk IMO!

ETA again, you MUST use a moisturiser on your face after shaving with a safety, the cut shaves REALLY close and does take dead skin with it. Your face will feel like its on fire if you don't moisturise the freshly exposed new skin after shaving!

Using it properly it still takes a layer of skin off and leaves new skin.ETA again, you MUST use a moisturiser on your face after shaving with a safety, the cut shaves REALLY close and does take dead skin with it. If you have sensitive skin anyway you are going to be in trouble.
The problem with things like this is we all have different skin, shakotan might have less sensitive skin than you.
All I can say is when I used mine it looked like I had sunburn for 2 days. Close shave but my skin just can't take it.

There's not much you can do if you have sensitive skin which doesn't like being exfoliated so aggresively!
Thanks shakotan,
I think I'm going to use up all my blades for my fusion thing or whatever it is and by then hopefully I'll be proficient with my merkur and be able to judge for myself whether to take the risk!
I don't want to have to have two razors and I'm too ugly to consider going for a back, sack 'n' crack!
I suppose I could have asked Bob Geldof, he shaved (seemingly) all his body hair with a safety razor in The Wall!

Howdy folks,
Well,, The razor arrived on saturday and I've been getting used to it slowly, cocked up yesterday and didn't have my face wet enough before applying soap resulting in a bit of the dreaded razor rash! However it cleared up before this morning which was unusual as I would normally have to skip shaving for a couple of days when it happens!
Well after two (relatively) successful shaves with my futur I decided to give the lychees a super-peel!
EASY!!!! I set it to 1 and had a really close snag free shave! Were I a cat I would tea bag myself they are so smooth!
