Why were they still footling about putting extra dominoes in once it had started? Was it just to add drama or had they somehow forgotten to complete some sections?

I think that is part of the "show"

Maybe they were "safety gates" so that each section was isolated from the rest to avoid premature wotsits

Yes, all part of the show. If the kids fail the task a whole section will fail. Some of the sections are into the hundreds of thousands of dominoes. So they only need to fail a couple of tasks along with a couple of section failures and the record attempt can be a bit of a disaster. I think it was the 2007 attempt where this happened.

One year they had some fancy rig to start the first domino and it missed!!! They ended up reaching over with a length of wood to start it going.

The whole attempt is shown live on TV in a few European countries. For the last couple of years Channel 5 have shown a highlight show the day after. It usually takes place on a Friday night in the middle of November
