E39 OBD2 or not?

Looking at getting a code reader http://talktomycar.co.uk/products/codereaders/mj00...

This shoud work with E39's shouldnt it? My card has both 16 pin (inside car) and 20 pin (under bonnet)diagnostics sockets.

Do bmw use can bus protocol?

It was legally activate in the UK from 2001 on Petrol cars, and 2003 on Diesels.
The e39 does use can-bus
