This is somthing i have wanted to do for a long time and now that I'm about to be made redundant for the 2nd time in two years it seems like a good time to get stuck in. I understand that the first year is a bit of a mission with the pay not that great but its the longer term benefits that i like.

Although most of my recent working experience relates to office type work i'm also qualified as an engineer so have a good mechanical understanding. Believe it or not i can drive a steam train...lol, although thats been limited to experience type days rather than anything more!!

I know there was a thread here not so long ago about someone who is in the process of training up so to speak, so i'll be off to search for that in a min...!

What i would like though is any idea's or advice on how best to get started. Obviously i can search round the main rail operator websites but they generally say not looking and are not really very helpful.

I really dont mind if i ended up with passenger or freight, in some ways i'd actually prefer freight.

Can anyone help me at all with things like contacts or even with operators that may be looking in the near future. I dont actually get made redundant until June so I have a bit of time in hand. If you dont want to post here, feel free to e mail me as well.

Thanks in advance....
