Golf gti which one????
Discussion
Hello chaps having never had a vw before i thought i would try here
.
Im looking for a 1998-2000 golf gti for around £2.5k assuming with a mileage of around 100k.
Which ones the better buy or preferred car? 1.8t or 2.0?
Im guessing the usual things to look out for cambelt change, service intervals etc any thing else to watch out for?
Thanks in advance

Aircon should be cold, not a mouse fart.
Electric windows should go up and down, not rattle and crash.
Arches should be made of metal, not cornflakes or Isopon.
Previous owners should not be named Trev, Barry, Kevin or Wayne.
Cambelt should be done on time, along with the water pump and brand new stretch bolts religiously. If the owner doesn't know get it done properly straight away.
Oh, and budget for dampers, springs and possibly roll bars if you intend to do anything other than go in straight lines

1.8T every time, if you are planning on tuning after you have purchased it and can stretch to it i'd go for a later 2001 onwards with the AUM engine code and more importantly the KO3s turbo (as opposed to the smaller KO3 turbo fitted to earlier AGU engine codes), easily tuned to over 200 bhp.
After having mine for nealry 2 years now and lurking around forums the following are common faults:
Rear wiper motor leaks (symptom of this is a jet of water that follows the moving wiper arm when it should spray straight up)
Poor peformance usually linked to particluarly unreliable air mas meters
window regulators are common to fail(symptom is when button pressed to close fully, the window closes and then immedietly comes back down halfway)
Coil packs are common to fail, as are coolant temp senders, and air mass meters.
Origonal water pumps have plastic impellors fitted which break up and need to be replaced (a genuine replacement now still has the plastic impellor. An aftermarket replacement is a better option as the have metal impellors, I got mine from GSF)
All in all a good solid car and I can recomend them thoroughly
Although as a vw nut I can say they do lack that 'older car' character
